Leeds Utd 2-1 Shrewsbury Town Match Thread - Post Match Debate

Wednesday 9th August 7:45pm| Elland Road

Shrewsbury Town are the visitors to Elland Road on Wednesday evening, in the first round of the Carabao Cup. The two sides have encountered each other 17 times over the years, with most of those fixtures in the old Division Two back in the 1980s. Leeds have been victors on 10 occasions, Shrewsbury 3 times and the spoils shared on 4 occasions. The last time the two sides met was eleven years ago. That too was a League Cup encounter at Elland Road, which Leeds ran ot 4-0 winners (Becchio, Varney, Norris and McCormack). Neil Warnock picked a very colourful squad that day with Aidy White, Paul Green and Michael Brown all playing their part.

Daniel Farke is set to make wholesale changes to the squad, which was held 2-2 by Cardiff City. Liam Cooper, Crysencio Summerville, Stuart Dallas, Tyler Adams, Patrick Bamford, Junior Firpo, Mateo Joseph, Sam Greenwood, Cody Drameh and Georginio Rutter are all ruled out through injury. In will come Karl Darlow, Darko Gyabi, Jamie Shackleton, Joe Gelhardt, and Ian Povada alongside Luke Ayling, Leo Hjelde, Charlie Cresswell, Ethan Ampadu, Archie Gray and Dan James. Kris Moore, Cody Drameh, Lewis Bate and Sonny Perkins make the bench as does Luis Sinisterra.

Shrewsbury Town manager Matt Taylor has promised to shuffle the pack for his teams trip to Leeds but rules our wholesale changes, with the aim of giving them the best chance of causing a Carabao Cup. Salop won their opening League One fixture of the season against Cheltenham 1-0 on Saturday. Nohan Kenneh, who is on loan from Hibbs, could line up for Shrewsbury against his former club having started in the heart of midfield for that victory. Taylor sees the first round tie as a huge opportunity for his players and has promised a positive performance.

I am expecting us to go there and give a really good account of ourselves. We are going to be aggressive and play the way we want to play, both in and out of possession. It will be a tough game. They have some fantastic players. I watched their game against Cardiff on Sunday and at times they were devastating around the final third. But if we are really serious this year, we have to make sure we compete and compete for everything. We understand we are the underdogs. I have no issue with that. We understand for big parts of the game we are going to have to suffer because we won’t have the ball. But a character trait I am interested in seeing in our players is when we don’t have the ball how much work are we prepared to do for each other?

I wonder what Farke will do with selection here. We probably need another practice game give that Farke has had limited time with the squad. A first 11 run out would be useful. But with another game 3 days later, I doubt he'll do that.

Darlow
Byram, Cresswell, Strujik, Hjelde
Ampadu, Shackleton
Poveda, Bate, James
Gelhardt

I left out Gyabi and Perkins because I don't think they're ready. But hope they get some good game time too

Bloody hell Andrew you must be joking i hope about a first 11 run out.

No way for me - Get all those playing mentioned above and ffs don't risk at all any key members of the first players you think you essentially need, not a chance in hell i hope.

But it makes total sense for the rest of the second string, and especially that striker.

Our selection of players that are 'just about better than a good youth team' is v bare and we cannot afford any more injuries for DF at all, it's fcking squeaky bum time already after 1 game and LC, he's already verging on what Bert had to contend with and we don't want the pricks and general fcking idiots baying for his blood so soon, let's open our eyes this time huh and see the bigger picture v clearly ....HE HAS A PRETTY BOB STANDARD - SHITE SQUAD.

In regards to these...Karl Darlow, Lewis Bate, Darko Gyabi, Jamie Shackleton, Joe Gelhardt, Sonny Perkins and Ian Povada.

I'd be playing the lot but swop Pov for DJ.

And btw that squad that is soooooooo bare would get absolutely raped and pillaged if we were in the Prem now, like lambs to the slaughter.

I'm praying it's just about good enough to compete in The Championship.

That's because many of our "premier league" players decided to take a sabbatical. That said. Our squad - that included all those that jumped ship this summer - wasn't good enough for the PL either. Hence we got relegated.

Me too. Looking at the squad this season, I expected both of them to be involved. But Gyabi didn't have a great preseason. And Farke seems to have labelled Perkins an U-23 player. Still. There's plenty of opportunity for both to push for more 1st team involvement.

And they would NOT be good enough for this Championship neither, be glad to see the back of them.

'Footballers' they are not.

We have players atm that are at least equally as good if not better than them all.

DF desperately needs help, but not from those, he's already on the right tracks, be glad they're gone and rejoice if we happen to get ANY amount of cash for them.

I think that will be close to the starting line up. I would be very surprised if Mullins doesn’t get a run out. He featured in a pre season friendly.

If we want to lose the game then we may as well start Mullens and Moore too. I don't like wholesale changes to a team for a cup game. I particularly don't like it when the 21's have yet to play this season so most of the predicted team will only have had a few minute on the pitch and none as a team.

Shrewsbury are a big physical side, apparently.

I wouldn't risk our best players, definitely not Ampadu or Gray.
