Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Friday 3rd November) Leeds slap £30m asking price on loan star

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Friday 3rd November, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Leeds slap £30m asking price on loan star

Everton have been dealt a major blow in their pursuit to turn Jack Harrison's loan move permanent, after recent media reports suggest that Leeds have told Everton they want £30m for the 26 year old. He arrived at Goodison Park mid August, but has only recently regained his fitness following the hip injury that kept him sidelined all Summer.

His return to action has coincided with an impressive upturn in the Toffee's form, winning three from their last five, during which time the winger has leapt up to third place in their 'Whoscored' ratings. Leeds bought Harrison from Manchester City for £11m in the Summer of 2021, but had spent £9m in loan fee's from the three previous seasons. He is contracted at Leeds until the Summer of 2028. Bearing this in mind, is £30m enough?

Startling figures regarding player sales revealed

Although the Jack Harrison deal would represent a healthy nett profit of £10m, it's startling to recall how few players at Elland Road have even generated a fee in recent times.

Preceding their 22/23 campaign, the Whites generated £100m, thanks mainly to the sales of Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips, but you have to go all the way back to 2019 to find the last time Leeds generated any income whatsoever (Jack Clarke, Pontus Jansson, Kemar Roofe, Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Samu Saiz, Pawel Cibicki, Tom Pearce and Aapo Halme - total £26m)!

It means, when Leeds unearth a gem, like Gnonto or Summerville, they need to be generating substantial income to make it worth. Even the Thorp Arch academy are not living up to expectation. When you look at the likes of Leif Davis, Mateusz Bogusz, Sam Greenwood, Joe Gelhardt, Cody Drameh, Lewis Bate, Leo Hjelde - the truth is, Leeds have / will be lucky to break-even.

Gnonto wants out?

Italian sporting news outlet calciomercato.com are reporting that Wilfred Gnonto has asked his agent to find him a new club, in preparation for the January transfer window. The Italian International is out of form; his frustration of having to play in the Championship is compounded by the fact that he isn't even first choice in Daniel Farke's line-up. He came close to joining Everton in the Summer, but Leeds held firm.

It is rumoured that Gnonto is pushing for a move to Serie A, where Lazio are waiting patiently in the wings to try and grab themselves a bargain. We are led to believe Leeds want around £20m, which sounds cheap when you consider he's still only 19yo, and a full Italian International. We also must remember that he has a 'substantial sell on fee, likely to be between 20%-25%.

Lazio don't even want to pay £20m and want to negotiate the price down! Do Leeds have a closing down sale sign pinned up at Elland Road? Call me paranoid, but doesn't it seem that clubs believe they can get a bargain from Leeds Utd?

Like i've said in a previous post - It would be nice if for once we can pull the strings, and find out exactly how much EFC are prepared to pay for a player that seems to be one of their better players atm - Are we in a position with the 49er's for them to let DF handle it and for him to think...

" H'mmm EFC definitely need and want him, he could be in their eyes the key to them staying up, i don't particularly need him, so fck it, start at £45m and take it from there "

Whilst knowing deep down he'd take £25m if it came to it.

Nowt wrong in trying, unless like Kemo guesses, we're brassic.

Suppose as per, it all depends on who we are eyeing up and if we have funds to complete.

All guesswork, unless we've someone on the inside, Kemo ?

Money money money, we seem to be obsessed with the value of a player.
We look at Manchester City and Newcastle and see that money has brought them success.
So that must be the only way to go and we forget about Leicester winning the Premiership.

How was that even possible? Was it an anomaly a statistical blip?
What were the exact conditions that led to such an achievement?
Were they thinking about the value of their team?
Were they continually contemplating the resale value of their players?
Knowing the price of everything, but the value of nothing.

Does a player play better if he costs more and does that give him some worth and self-esteem?
Bielsa took average championship players not costing much and got them promoted to the premiership, which proves that success may hang on more intangible qualities than money.

His philosophy was clearly stated in a simple statement, which every fan should keep in mind
One needs to be loved to win, not win to be loved.
Never confuse intellect with imagination.
Never let good taste stand in the way of style

The academy years ago was meant to be a way of bringing young kids through and if they were good enough introduciing them gradually in to the first team and saving a lot of money in transfer fees. Nowadays all it does is line the pockets of the owners because the club is not run properly and the chances of building a successful team are virtually non existent on a long term basis

I'm not sure it would be right to. I'm in contact with journalists both local to Leeds and Internationally, former Directors and former players.

If you google Harrison 30m - you'll see I'm not the only one suggesting this.

For generating PL players we have one of the most successful acads in the country.
According to a survey in the YP a few years ago.

So who slapped a £30m tag on Harrison.

Or are you just making stuff up again? :)

Gnonto has not been at his best this season, Farke has seen that and has, therefore, not been giving him much game time. I don’t know the reason for his dip in form but I suspect it must have something to do with him still being unsettled. When the club passed on the chance to sell him over the Summer and insisted that he stay, despite reported tantrums, I thought he had accepted the situation and would knuckle down, but, disappointingly, I don’t think he has.

I’ve said before that a contract is a contract, signed by both parties and should be honoured equally by both parties. Unfortunately players are always in the driving seat and have ways of breaking the contract by sulking, by not giving 100%, and eventually, by causing disruption to the team.

If that is his mindset then it might be prudent to let him leave and, to me, £30 millionish would be acceptable. If his “want away” attitude is true, I just hope it won’t unsettle his good mate Cree Summerville who, as it’s turned out, seems to be the much better player and will be essential to the team’s fortunes this season.

What is the point of a production line iof talent when the end result is they are then flogged to the highest bidder on a regular basis it only benefits the owners nobody else then they are then replaced with players who are not as good and bought for a fraction of what we.received for the players been sold
If the club had ambition know how and foresight they would be building a team around these players but unfortunately this won't happen unless we have the infrastructure in place and certainly playing premier League football again

We ain't got a cat in hell's chance of keeping them unless there are major changes at this club
