We didn’t sign him because his club were not willing to do a deal. It matters not when he came as the reason for his delay could have a multitude of reasons. The indisputable fact is that he was a long term transfer target.

If he was a long term target, as you suggest, then the facts would suggest we didn't move quickly to sign him. As such a reasonable assumption would be that we either couldn't afford him, his club refused to sell him, or we weren't quite sure.

Whether he was First, Second, Third or One Hundredth choice, he has turned out to have been a good choice.
