Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Wednesday 27th August) Not fit to wear the shirt

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Wednesday 27th August, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road…

Not fit to wear the shirt

The Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday was not merely a defeat; it was a stark reminder that despite guiding the Whites to automatic promotion, Daniel Farke is out of his depth. Just days after a humiliating 5-0 league thrashing, this second-round tie against a Championship "crisis club" – fielding a team with an average age of 21, including five teenagers – was precisely the fixture manager Daniel Farke needed to steady the ship.

The expectation, both from the team and undoubtedly the travelling fans, was a straightforward victory against what was, on paper, a significantly weaker, makeshift side in a sparsely populated stadium. Yet, Leeds’ first-half display was nothing short of dire: slow, ponderous, and disjointed, lacking any semblance of urgency or creative spark. They played as if merely turning up constituted a win, failing to grasp the opportunity for a morale-boosting response.

Even a slight second-half improvement couldn't mask the fundamental failings. The match raised serious questions about Farke’s tactical choices, the quality of their recent signings, and the players’ collective hunger and fight. The penalty shootout, sealed by three consecutive Leeds failures, was a fittingly ignominious end to an evening that underscored a troubling lack of desire and conviction. They got exactly what their lacklustre approach merited, leaving more questions than answers ahead of another crucial league fixture.

Farke hurt and embarrassed

Daniel Farke admitted he felt ‘hurt’ and ‘embarrassed’ after last nights result, and made an odd claim on the scale of the upset. Eight of the Owls players involved last night had played less than five senior matches.
Out of their outfield starting 10, skipper for the night Jamal Lowe was the only Wednesday player to have earned more than Gabriel Otegbayo’s haul of 18 first team appearances.

We have to take all of the criticism and we are self-critical because out of all the chances we should put four or five goals to bed. “It’s always a bit annoying and you feel a bit embarrassed as a Premier League side, but we have been involved in so many games on this level, especially in the cup – this is why there are so many surprises and shock results.

Even the team in the lower league can win such a game. Today was one of those days and congratulations to Sheffield Wednesday. You can feel for them (the fans). We’re sorry anyhow. We feel a bit embarrassed that we don’t go through in such a game. We can just say ‘sorry’ because they made the trip and wanted to celebrate.

I'm "hurt and embarrassed" by how out of his depth he is. We need to decide if we want PL football or we want to be a charity case.

Empty stadium!!! it was a perfect scenario to play Patrick Bamford.

Done over by a bunch of babyfaced assassins, what stories they will be able to tell their grandkids... you won't believe me , bottom of the league we were, and the gaffer fields most of the youth academy. Leeds put out most of their new signings, and they are thinking "what the" last week we're caught in the headlights at Arsenal and froze, and now we are playing in an empty stadium, going from the highs to the lows... what have I let myself in for, I didn't sign up for this, this is bad, I should have stayed on the continent, at least the food and weather was better... Joseph and Ramazani are well out of it, they're the lucky ones.

We were living rent free in their heads... keeper played a stormer, and that really rubbed it in. You could see the Leeds players thinking wish he was our goalie, all we've got is three duffers

And so it was when it came to the penalty shoot out it was a foregone conclusion, they missed all three, and we scored four... our Barry leading the way.

Best day in my life, will stay in my memory forever.

I would add also that too many of the players we have bought in look to be at the same standard of level. Replacing like for like.

I hope that I am wrong...

We have zero quality players that can change a game. We signed unfit, out of form, average players that can't change a game. Don't know where 60 goals are coming from as in three game we have scored one from open play and hardly created any chances. We desperately need a marquee signing at No10 and as a striker and all Farke does is sign second rate wingers and full backs !! I was all for letting him have a chance after last seasons performance but now it is apparent that he is way out of his depth.

I hope you are wrong too Elland but we do look like we are living in the Land of the Plodding Giants.

I am very worried that players we are trying to lure to the club will now look at Farke and think he might beat Potter to the axe. Once again the Leeds shirt becomes chainmail armour.

Top players aren't going to be attracted to play for Farke, unlike Raphinha and Rodrigo who were attracted by Bielsa. It's kind of why there were all those rumours that Farke would be replaced, so we could get better targets.

Dyche. It might not be pretty, but he'd keep us up.

Many issues I see:
- Players look unfit and unprepared for this level
- Poor pre season including playing lower tier German sides in front of no one. Surprised The 49ers didn't take part in those American tournaments. Didn't play enough matches or top quality opposition.
- The players had two months off between Plymouth and returning to pre-season, which is too long. We should've been back two weeks earlier to work on fitness. Bielsa knew this and brought them in earlier.
- Looks like we've just decided to copy what Southampton did, even though they got the second lowest points total in PL history.

In the grand scheme of the whole season losing to Arsenal & going out of the Tin Pot Cup is nothing to worry about. The manner in which we let in 5 soft goals and the way we folded against Arsenal plus that disgrace of a performance last night is really something to worry about.
We can make all the excuses we want about tactics, lack of game time, different formation etc but these are professional footballers on a fortune who should be cringing after that performance and made to pay compensation to all the travelling fans who fork out hard earned money to follow Leeds United.
Shame on them.

Nothing to do with pre-season - we played Man Utd, Villareal and AC Milan pre-season. How many more big teams do you want?

We've looked more than fit enough - it's not as if we're conceding late goals all the time through tiredness. Just a lack of quality on the pitch imo.

We've gone for a summer of "let's strengthen the squad", rather than let's strengthen the first eleven

Couple of games in last season and it was the same stuff , sack the manager , our squad is useless etc . ,etc. Losing to Arsenal doesn't define our season and while they did score 5 that was somewhat flattering . The performance last night was poor but 9 times out of 10 they would have won by a couple of goals and we wouldn't have had to witness the abysmal penalties we took. Let's see what Saturday brings but I would hope we never resort to Dyche.

Agree RM. We don't need reactionary actions just now. Let's review 8-9 games in, then take the best route of action. Upcoming matches have some easier ones than Arsenal and Newcastle (e.g. Burnley, West Ham, Wolves, Fulham). That will be a better reflection of our level.

Last night was a total shambles. I think the players thought they could walk it, and clearly they couldn't and never got going.

To remind of last seasons start: D, L (Cup), D - 2 points / 2 matches - and that was in a league we should be leading. We're currently 1 point better off :)

Yeah great idea. Get Dyche in who was sacked by Burnley with them heading for relegation and then sacked by Everton with them in freefall too. Amazing how a manager is seen as some sort of relegation survival expert because they have been sacked so didn't take a side down. In fact Dyche actually took Burnley down (and back up again) during his time there. So yeah let's get a manager who has taken a team down, same as Farke, and been sacked twice by teams who thought he was taking them down.

Usual complete over reaction. Let's declare the Revie side as not fit to wear the shirt too.

Let's give the players a chance to bed in too before writing them all off. Can we transfer some of our 'fans' to MU as they will fit in better there.
