Fresh £25mil bid gone in.
Should be our last offer imo, or we'll end up massively overpaying. I'm sure there's countless players who can do what he can, that would be a fraction of the price. There's more important positions we need to spend on.

Gruev ..

Last seasons main midfield was

Ampadu - Gruev - Stach - Aaronson

This season it can be

Ampadu - Charles - Stach - Wilson

Assuming 5 at the back.

I see Shea Charles as a development player and thus not automatically a First Team pick right at the start of the season. He would start on the bench and then be brought on for increasing minutes. Hopefully, he will ready to push to be a first pick by Christmas. Unless Daniel Farke decides he is something extra special and launches him in from game 1.

Might sound a bit odd considering the fee of say £25m but this is still a young man making his way in football.

Agree. That kind of money needs to be spent on a key player, most likely a playmaker. He's not better than Stach, who cost much less. He's not better than Ampadu either who cost £7m. We can find a similar player for cheaper.

I'm concerned that when we overpay they're never worth the price tag ie James, Rodrigo, Aaronson, Rutter (ok we made a profit there).

Remember that comment that Massimo Cellino made about water melons and managers? The man was a bit of a clown but what he said makes a lot of sense - essentially you never know what you're going to get. In the same way, you never know with players.

The two classic examples in recent times are Raphinha - bargain - and Rutter - ridiculously expensive for us . Raphinha turned out to be a lovely surprise but Rutter for all the big fee paid for him was initially like a fish out of water amid the chaos that there was at the club. One made us money, the other broke even luckily for us but both could have made much less or deadwood. You just never know. We were never in a place to hang on to players like that.

In that regard the Club is between a rock and a hard place where fans are concerned. If they go out hunting in the bargain basement they'll be accused of being cheapskates. If they go out and throw big money at a couple or three "marquee" players there is no guarantee that they will be all round successes and even if they were fans will want a greater number drafted in.

Yes, unfortunately transfers are rated based on how much you spend rather the quality you bring. Because that shows "ambition" apparently.

It's funny as our best signings tend to be the cheaper ones: Raphinha, Jansson, Hernandez, Tanaka, Ampadu, Stach, Bijol, DCL, Darlow. Yet the expensive ones tend to be poor signings.

Southampton have rejected our 2nd offer.

Want £30mil.

Paying more for Charles than we got for Summerville, nah move on.

Tanaka is better anyway.

I agree. Time to tell Southampton to jog on. £20m in today's market might be the right level IMHO, nothing more

You back off for now, return to it later... 30 is a touch expensive.

From a N.I. fan who has seen Charles play a few times over the last 2/3 seasons, no way is he a 30 million pound player, not even close to that.
He is a good player with a lot of talent and will only get better, but for 30 million you want top class and Premiership ready, Charles is not there just yet.

I can't see our management overpaying for Charles.

They'll pull out if the fee is too high, and rightly so!
