The Wine Thread

Post by Evan R »

Hello fellow MOT wine enthusiasts!

Carrying over from the World Cup thread, where we momentarily hijacked the thread to talk vino :wine:

This is a space for people to post recommendations, what they're currently drinking, winery visits, general wine discussion.

I will kick things off with a wonderful Oregon Pinot Noir that I treated myself to tonight after a decent winner came in today betting the Scottish Open (Thanks, Tom Kim!). Like a few here have mentioned- I also try to keep around the $20 range when possible but enjoy some higher end (slighty, :)) bottles form time to time. This is a 2021 Pinot Noir from the Willamate Valley (Dundee Hills). Paired perfectly tonight with grilled salmon filets. Very Burgundian in style.

Great thread Evan. Thank you.
I am no wine expert, but missus and I do enjoy our wine.
I'll try and post a few thoughts for other wino's on the forum.
Born and raised in South Africa and last 32 year in British Columbia, has hopefully broadened my wine tastes a little.

I've only started drinking Pinot Noir (white) again recently as a friend recommended it to me when out for a meal in May.

The only wine which doesn't upset me.

We had a glass of Pinot Noir every evening with our meal whilst on holiday in Southwold.

Also treated ourselves to a bottle from the Adnams store.

Maybe PJM could start a whine thread??

As for wine, give me beer any day. After a couple of glasses of wine I get extremely thirsty.

You need to listen to the 'pub landlord' on this girlies! :)

Problem with a lot of US wines is getting them in the UK
How about this wine from the Wine Society.
Do you know the winery Evan.?

It's not one I've had/heard of but it rates pretty well on cellartracker (89.9) and I'm seeing it around $29 USD on wine.com which is about the going rate for a solid Willamatte Valley Pinot. Usually around $20-30 gets you a good bottle. The one I posted on Sunday was $55 and while it was really nice, I wouldn't say it was worth the cost. Some of the classic producers for the region that are usually pretty easy to track down and around that $30 mark: Arterberry Maresh, Evesham Wood, Ken Wright Cellars, Adelsheim, Patricia Green, Drouhin

Thanks Evan 👍🏼
I will search for those.

This is interesting as I love high quality Chenin Blanc.
Apparently a very exclusive wine in the UK.
Made in tiny quantities of 1000 bottles this vintage.
Made in Oregon.
£40

That is interesting. I must say I haven't had many Oregon Chenins, at least that I can recall, but it is a variety I love as well. Especially Loire Valley Chenins. Francois Chidaine is one of my favorite producers and has several in the $30 range that are wonderful.
You'll have to let me know how the Oregon Chenin is if you give it a go!

Opened a bottle of Vina Tondonia Reserva 2010 at HT in the footy. It's a decent Rioja which they always age for a good few years before releasing and the 2014 vintage will be made available later this month. Cost for the 2014 will be around £35 and Parker gives it a 96 point rating.

Tonights vintage was very nice but now saving half the bottle for tomorrow seems as we crashed out.

This was a tinto but they also do a blanco and a rosado as well. There is also the Gran Reserva but they are seriously expensive and start around the £200 a bottle mark

Love that, Jammy. Lopez de Heredia Riojas are an amazing value. And as you pointed out, have massive aging potential. Spot on for the style, also.

So far I've had the 2005,07,08,09,10,11,12, & 2013.

Definitely amazing value.

Also have ordered a case of the latest 2014 release and this time have gone for the 37.5ml bottles as I'll just have them by myself when I fancy a little treat.

Some good vintages in that mix! I love being able to get splits (375ml) as my wife isn’t much of a wine drinker so when I open 750ml it’s sometimes a bit of a waste if I can’t polish it off in 2 days. And sometimes those aged Riojas can start to fade a little on day 2 even.

Plus the Bosconia 2013
Have you had the white Vina Gravonia.
Love quality white Rioja. I have the 2010 of that.
Fabulous wine.

1965
My birth year wine from earlier this year.
Terrible vintage across Europe. Lopez Heredia said they have none at all in their cellars.
Was in perfect condition but a little simple compared to a really good vintage. Very much enjoyed though.

This was the reply after I enquired about the wine.
Bought at auction btw. By all accounts their cellars are one of the great winery visits.
…………………………………………………………
Thank you for your appreciation and for the picture. 1965 was not a particularly great vintage at home but we are aware that both our grandfather and our father did several selections of this vintage for very special friends such as Mr. Carmelo Aguirre that was a good customer and friend of our family. We, as a family are more proud of making good wines in difficult years than of the very best so, depending how the bottle has been kept, it should taste good or not. It looks very well on the neck and the fact that the label is damage is also a good sign since it shows that it might have been in a humid place. Where did you buy it?

The wine was sold in 1976, 49 years ago!!!

Please, let us know how it was whenever you open it.

Thanks again.

Best regards from Rioja,

María José López de Heredia
BIZNIETA

Yes I've got a bottle of the blanco Gravonia.

I'd forgotten about to be honest so not sure on the vintage.

I love wine. It's more expensive over here thatn it is in England. You can get decent wine for £5 in England. You're looking at £7 here for something nice with an average price around £8/£9 for something a bit nicer! We do have a couple of staples we go back to but since my surgery in March, I can no longer drink white or green: both give me wicked acid. So I'm strictly drinking reds now.

This one is a current favourite (around 8 quid)…

Enjoyed a Chateau Cantemerle 2010 last night.

Last one of six and think they cost about £30 each.
