We are progressing in talks for 29-year-old Swiss international defender Nico Elvedi.
Best known for his long spell at Borussia Mönchengladbach, Elvedi has racked up a huge amount of Bundesliga experience and has also played Champions League and international football.
He’s a modern centre-back — composed on the ball, comfortable playing out from the back and generally very reliable with his positioning and reading of the game.
His versatility is another positive, with the ability to play both centre-back and right-back, while his experience at the highest level should make him a relatively safe option.
But there are certainly question marks.
At 29, this wouldn't be a signing made with significant resale value in mind. If a sizeable fee is involved, we would need to get a number of his best years out of him to justify the investment.
He also isn't the most physically dominant centre-back and lacks pace for a high line.
If we're paying a premium, there are legitimate concerns. If the price is sensible, however, this could be a very shrewd move for a defender who knows his game inside out.
Still work to do, but one to keep a very close eye on.
Elvedi, Nico
