Match Thread Nottingham Forest v Leeds - Caribao Cup - Match Thread

Post by The Subhuman »

Leeds make their second trip to the City Ground in the space of four days on Tuesday night, back on Trentside for the League Cup second round just 80 hours or so after Anton Stach's 88th-minute free-kick settled the Premier League opener 1-0. It's a rare scheduling quirk, and one Farke has already been asked to unpack, his message being that despite the same venue and largely the same two squads, this is a fundamentally different fixture. This time it's knockout football, and both sides will be out to win it.

It's a competition Leeds will want to have gone better in by the time this year is out. Last season's second-round exit came against a crisis-hit Sheffield Wednesday side, with Farke fielding a team built around teenagers and fringe players. On paper it should have been routine, but a flat, toothless first-half performance set the tone for a night that never really improved, and Leeds went out on penalties after missing three in a row. It raised real questions at the time about squad depth, application, and whether a young, heavily rotated XI can be trusted with a knockout tie. All questions that feel relevant again this week.

On the home front, Forest have their own selection headaches. Nicolo Savona remains out following a setback in his recovery from knee surgery and is a couple of weeks away, while captain Ryan Yates is a doubt after missing the weekend's game with what's believed to be a minor issue. They key piece of injury news is that Morgan Gibbs-White picked up an ankle injury at the weekend and will miss Tuesday nights game. Omari Hutchinson, back from injury but not yet fully up to speed, is another to watch, and summer signing Ousmane Diomande could be in line for more minutes as he builds match fitness following his move from Sporting.

For Leeds, Gabriel Gudmundsson (thigh) and Willy Gnonto (hamstring) remain sidelined, with Ilia Gruev back in full training with a view to a return within a couple of weeks rather than rushed back for this one. Lucas Perri is easing his way back after a pre-season injury lay-off, and Mateo Joseph continues his own individual rehab from his ACL injury, with no timeline offered. Farke was clear that nobody involved on Saturday has picked up a fresh knock, so it's largely a case of the same group being available, with late calls on sharpness rather than fitness.

Farke's own tone on the competition itself was notably guarded. Asked directly about the club's approach, he stopped short of declaring an intent to go for it this year, saying only that it's "too early to say we will attack this competition" and that Tuesday won't be treated like a cup final. He did confirm rotation is coming, "perhaps more than a league game, but not a complete change", with a chance for those on the fringes of the XI to stake a claim, and hinted Nico Elvedi could be in line for his debut after being an unused option in the closing stages on Saturday. Notably, he did add he'd "never say no to another good cup run," pointing back to his run to the final with Norwich.

So, over to you. Do we actually want a proper go at this competition this season, given where the priorities probably lie? Do we stick largely with the first team given how last year's youth-heavy approach against Wednesday went, or is half a team of reserves the right call again? And should any of the U21s be getting a start here? Don't forget the poll!

THe option I'd choose isn't there - which is to give it a go and go reasonably strong. Hard to see too many changes in defence given GG is likely still out. Would expect Elvedi to start and it may be we go 4 at the back so we can rest a couple of centrebacks. Would expect Longstaff and Nmech to start and probably a fair bit of rotation in midfield. Maybe DJ as left back.

So I expect a fair few changes but that it won't be kids being thrown in.

Love to make a run, but.....

This cup competition doesn't rate highly for me. That being said, I agree with Weasel, but for a different reason.

The only reason I can see for playing the strongest side is to give them an opportunity to gel better (Wilson in particular).

Ampadu will start IMO, need the captain on the pitch, unless he has a niggle.

I have no idea who else he will pick, but it will be a strong team.

Do we want a league cup run? Do we stick with the first team or start with half the reserves? Do we start any U21's?

Don't forget the poll
You've nicked my poll for tomorrow!

Why not stick to the result one as you did for the Forest league match

Are we a serious club or not.

Cup competitions are the shortest route to success- we loved the FA Cup run last year and our expectations were ok. Usual debate on here about the distraction.

Not like we have a European campaign to manage.

We are no longer in puberty - Crack on Daniel. We need some ambition.

It was always going to relate to the EFL Cup/Forest game.

I had this one written down on my notepad amongst the polls I've used over the last few days.

I'll think again.....makes it more difficult for me runnng them on a daily basis.

A poll thought - If Amps not on the pitch - who is the next best captain? Struijk is gone.

I deleted a few other thoughts due to Heineken impact

Ampadu always starts, he’ll play Tuesday barring injury.

I dont think so. Trafford needs the minutes. I was surprised Perri was even on the bench on Saturday. He's already had a medical at Torino, but we've tied him down to a chair til we get in a replacememt :roflmao:

Only thing I think may change with the line up above is I think Justin will be on the bench, Stack on the left and Amps will play.
Forest are too good not to start with either Rodon or Amps. We're not playing a low division side - Forest look pretty good for a top 10 finish to me.

Other option then would be for Rodon to start, as captain, and Elvedi comes on from the bench.

Rodon was 'officially' announced as a vice captain during the preseason.

Leeds also posted that the "leadership group" is Amps, Rodon, Bijol, DCL and Justin.

I'm also pretty sure Farke sees Elvedi being part of that group soon. He was captain at Gladbach for a while and highly regarded as a leader.

Gruev was in the leadership group IIRC. It will be interesting to see if he gets any mins this season when he is fit. We are looking to sign another DCM if the Charles bid was anything to go by. I believe he is in the last year of his contract. We may look to get a few quid in the winter window, although as a Jonny foreigner he can agree pre contract terms in January.

I will not be surprised if he we do not see him wear the shirt again before the last game of the season, if he is going to leave. Although, it may depend on injuries / player availability down the road.

Don’t forget, Forest are in exactly the same boat as us. Wouldn’t surprise me if Farke and Glasner come to a gentleman’s arrangement re selection.

Ps, on principle that I detest polls I’m not voting.

Did say it was the same for everyone? I said it was for me. If you did a poll on this I’d have to pick ‘no’.

Tonight’s Cup meeting with Nottingham Forest will reveal that Saturday’s 1–0 victory was merely the appetiser before the main course, because Daniel Farke has now had a first taste of Oliver Glasner’s Forest and will arrive armed with the tactical blueprint to dismantle them piece by piece.

Saturday showed Leeds controlling the contest, keeping Forest at arm’s length and striking decisively through Anton Stach’s late free-kick, while Glasner’s new regime looked short of attacking ideas.

Tonight, Farke turns the screw: relentless pressing, ruthless movement, waves of attacks and a midfield that suffocates Forest before they can breathe.

Glasner may have imagined Saturday was an unfortunate introduction to life at the City Ground, but it was actually the trailer for tonight’s feature presentation... and if Farke gets his way, Forest will be left wondering whether the Cup draw accidentally scheduled them for a tactical demolition rather than a football match.
