No transfer fees right?
Every business must pay wages and benefits - so whats your point?
We now have depth and the results are showing.
Rodon off for 10 weeks in the past would have been catastrophic- not so much now. That is what depth gives you.

We had depth, we're no deeper now than last year, less so atm

We've endured plenty of hidings in the past & bounced back (for example Chelsea last week), I expect Newcastle to do the same.
We'll be all right, but this will be a season of in between. Leaving the Howe-era behind and moving into a new one. You won't catch me joining our CEO in calling it Newcastle 2.0 though.

We've said good bye to - Bruno, Gordon, Tonali, Trippier and Pope (although the latter is still at the club I doubt he'll make much of an impact. Woltemade has gone out on loan too, but he wasn't really integral to how we played.

We've a REALLY young squad now, half of them aren't allowed to rent a van.

Jaissle is highly rated and I like that he's unafraid to change things up, but he remains inexperienced at this level, hasn't had a full preseason with the team, and has taken over a team very much in flux.

Looks like Elanga could miss the rest of the season with an ACL which means we'll either be playing Murphy or someone out of position. Ramsey and Joelinton missing means we're lacking physicality in the middle of the park, and while Nico G is a good player, he's not the driving force that Bruno was.

I think we've enough to do ok, and the gaes will likely be a lot of fun, but for as many 2-0 and 3-1 wins, there will be some crushing bruising 4-1 losses. As long as Jaissle learns from them and sets us up in a way that mitigates our weaknesses, I'll be pretty zen about finishing between 8-12th.

Piroe, Gnonto, Borneau & Byram were barely used and certainly didn't start many games so are no loss to the squad, whereas their replacements are more likely to challenge for a starting position as well as being more utilised by Farke from the bench.

Personally I judge depth by that criteria and not just numbers of players available.

Wilson, Elvedi & Bard are clearly going to see a lot of action this season as trusted players that Farke rates highly, plus we eagerly await the introduction of Bahoya to see what he's all about.

Clearly we now have a squad with is far more fit for purpose than last season.

It would be a mistake to gauge the criteria of depth as being purely numeric. That isn’t the case this year. Last year we did count our depth in numbers, this year the depth has quality. Fingers crossed, year on year the quality of depth will improve, the numbers can’t.

When we sold Kp & Raphinha the funds we got allowed us to improve our depth. Trouble was the players we bought were in the main not good enough. Big difference this season is that we have maintained the depth but also improved the quality.

As such we have better depth because the depth consists of better players, players that are good enough to start.

My concern for Newcastle would be if your manager was another Jesse Marsh and with your manager having trod the Red Bull path it may be that his tactics are set in stone. We saw with Marsch that his tactics were so flawed and easily worked out. We probably had a team that was good enough to stay up but were so poorly managed.

Exactly OB. Its been said many times now, we have build this team up bit by bit and establish ourselves in this league. That wont be done over night, and unfortunately there are a few fans who want too much too soon. They are going to have to learn how to stay in the real world and not go dreaming of us playing in the Champions League next season :)
We are progressing well, of course it could be better, but it could also have been worse, so lets be thankful for where we are right now.

The thought of Champions League makes me shudder. We don’t yet have the financial clout needed. For one thing, our SCR percentage would decrease - ok, it would be a reduced percentage of a larger net - but that would quickly be swallowed up by larger than comfortable wage bills.
For me, I’d be happy with a final league position just outside the European Egg Cup competitions for one more year, then build up for the next season with a genuine push.
All this talk of polish up your passport is premature.

Losing Elanga for a sustained period is a massive blow, Fish.

Maharemovic started all six games, Trafford five games, Elvedi has already started three times (sub x1), Wilson featured in all six games and Bard involved in two games. Only a matter of time before Bahoya makes his debut

The thought of all European competitions next season scares me!

We have to learn to walk before we run, improving quality skills applies at any level.

Could only see the highlights as work has been intense the past couple of days. Damn Peacock doesn’t have the replay, but what a performance! Brilliant performances from so many of our players. Would have been glorious to attend that one in person!

I really wouldn’t worry about that just yet, at least for another season or two.

At no point have I used a numerical criteria, I'm talking quality

Sorry cant agree with you on that.

Tarik, Elvedi, Bard have hugely increased depth at the back. We are not missing Joe right now and Bijol is having to fight to get his place back in the side. That's what more depth does.

We have a world class goalkeeper and (in spite of first game - outlier imo) a solid backup who is likely as good as our 1st keeper last year.

The fact that Aaronson is not starting regularly also proves more depth in midfield.

No way our depth is less than last season

Only if you make the assumption they're better than Struijk who was brilliant for us, Bornauw who was excellent everytime he played and Byram who never let us down.. Bard has made a number of errors already, Elvedi looks a slightly quicker version of Bijol but seems very clumsy at times and slow in his decision making. Tarik looks class but so was Struijk

Aaronson was overplayed last season, his replacement this season was with us last season. Unless the replacement is Wilson who's been benched

I've already said Trafford is a huge upgrade, but 55M plus to "find" our keeper is a lot of money

No clue what to expect of Bahoya, he's the joker in this comparison. If he plays a fair bit this season and plays well that does probablyu make us deeper this season. But we didn't replace Piroe and we didn't replace Gnonto

IMO

Our whole defender line is an upgrade on last year. As much as I was a Pascal fan, Tarik is a way superior player.
We are stronger in defense and have formation options we simply didnt have last year.
The results are showing it.
