Sports Participation.....Off To A Flyer
May have posted up a thread similar to this one on here previously, all the same there are several newbie posters on MOT recently
I know a couple of my friends on here do alot of serious cycling
So what sport activity do any of you participate in ?
I played football, rugby & cricket as a young un, continued to play football until my early twenties
Would love to take up golf or cricket again if i had more time !
Bowls is my game thesedays, only this afternoon i comfortably coasted into the semi-finals in one of the club's internal competition, the semi's will be much more difficult as i'm playing a player who has been a singles champion many times.
I also have a Pairs match on Sunday morning. The Pairs draw hasn't been too kind to me as my partner is a novice player who has only been playing a year or so, our opposition are two of the best players at the club so once again i have a battle on my hands, i'll give it a go though !
I consider myself to be a far better indoor bowler than the outdoor game. I only come into my own during July, August & September as i'm a good to firm specialist, i detest the playing on heavy surfaces during April, May & early June.
Hopefully i can pick up at least one outdoor trophy before i attempt to retain my indoor trophies !

Re: Sport's Participation
Well, 64, for me these days it's cycling, the occasional game of golf, and the even more occasional game of hoops.
If bowls is similar to bocce, then I guess I do that some, too. Oh, and there's pub quiz.

badly broke my left leg when I was 12, one on one with the keeper..full plaster for 5 months and 3 month recuperation and I lost my bottle
Cricketer from 22 to about 43. wrist spinner and wicket keeper, batted about 7 or 8 . I have the distinction of taking two hatricks in the same game

Cross country , trail and fell running ..... however living in flatish Essex , the fell running is a bit rare - have to go north for that - done Long Mynd fell run in Shropshire , Mortimers Forest , frequent Grizzly in Devon . Avoid road running / racing these days - just too dull . Football was my spot back in my youth , done judo , Aikido , American football ( Colchester Gladiators back in the late 80's for a very short while ) .Like most sports to watch with the biggest exception being rugby .

Played football, squash and jogged in my younger days until an accident shattered the bottom 2 discs in my back so had to retire from them all aged 30ish, on the advice of my speciallist I took up swimming which I was awful at but after a lot of trying managed to get upto 1800 mtrs 3/4 times a week, then I was at my fittest ever, because of the swimming I got into Scuba diving which I did for 10 years and logged around 750 dives, then I got the mountain bike bug which became the end of my water sports as after a bad accident which included broken collar bone and burst lung I can no longer do the diving and the collar bone restricts my swimming so its just the biking now, presently I am doing 20 miles hard slog(lot of hills) every other day.I am also trying to get back into hill walking but that is very seldom at the moment.

I gave up football for the very same reasons as the injuries were affecting my work, having to stay off work for three days convinced me that i needed to get my priorities right !
Sunday League football was brutal in the 70's

Cycling is a tough sport, even road cycling is frought with dangers with the amount of pot-holes & the inconsiderate drivers on the road !
Mountain biking must be even more dangerous Ges

first time we'd beaten them in 8 years apparently, We scored 127 from 20 overs and it didn't look good . but our seamer took 2 wickets in the first over I took a hatrick and a last ball wicket in my first he took 2 wickets in the next over and I mopped up the tail in my second . 3 overs two balls all out for 17 in 3.2 overs....we had to play a quick second game a ten over slog with reversed batting line ups

I used to own a carpet shop then and I kept some roll stock which was displayed on the shop floor, one day when we were replacing the rolls on one of the stands we were doing the top roll(9-10 feet of the floor)and to this day I don't know how but I fell and landed on the small of my back .Hospital sent me home said i'd slipped a disc(no x-ray or owt) was in bed for 3 weeks got back to work but kept getting problems over the next weeks/months eventually after a lot of persistance from myself they did a MRI scan and a mylogram(totally spelt wrong I'm sure) and discovered there was no discs in the bottom of my back and the third one up only had about 30% fluid so a total lifestyle change for a while.dezzy wrote: Id say biking is amazing, fecking dangerous though!!
