I really was impressed with Green. Austin did well for a Noggie league reject. Thought Norris ran the middle well. Byram looks about 12 years old, but played like an old hand in defense and did it with aplomb. Paddy seemed to organize really well, but didn't have much business. That meant the four in front of him where doing their jobs. Diouf surprised me, and is easily a class above than most on the pitch, provided he can stay interested and not get into trouble through the course of a season. Thought most everyone played well together for being an almost entirely new side. I would've liked to have seen us go for a second goal, rather than park the bus, but Warnock's tactics worked this time. Positive start for everyone involved.

Spot on 64. Not great but no comparison to last seasons 7 . 3 fiasco and general relegation form from February.

white.riot wrote:A realist I think. I love lufc but it doesn't cloud my judgement. The over markers will be the first to turn if things don't go to plan. Today we saw a wokmanlike peformance which is fine but we were struggling to stay in the game at times 2nd half (imo). A great win but not a greatperformance. Hoof is not the way. Any win is a good win. Colin is still showing a big minus on my balance sheet for the mess he made last year and for bad mouthing larry but he gets credit for today's result.
I agree that it wasn't a great performance, but considering how long our players have been playing together compared with theirs and given that they're a team who were in the Prem last year it is a good start!
I also agree that maybe some of the scores are a little over the top for what was a battling performance rather than outstanding, but I think your analysis was a little harsh.

My thoughts were:
Still lack width when Green is playing out wide, though that will probably improve the more he plays there. Personally I'd like to see him move into the middle if we get another winger in as he looks to have a bit more about him than Norris (bar the latter's great ball to Varney which he messed up...).
Austin looks like the holding mid we've been crying out for for seasons now.
Lots of hoofball again, but again that might improve with more team gelling (not sure, given Colin's former teams).
ROSS looks in very good form at the moment and him and Luci seem to be working pretty well together. Becchio gave a good battling performance, coming deep and holding the ball up a few times too!

Great day out had by me and my son! Really impressed by our new signings. I was blown away by Byram! What a great kid. He was very composed and read the game well. Played like a seasoned pro! Austin was great - he really cocked it up for Wolves and therefore did his job perfectly. Thought pearce made a couple of mistakes, but overall good. Diouf started slowly and couldn't get the ball at first but he grew into the game and showed some classy moves. Good to see he got a good reception. If he keeps his nose clean he could do well for us. Wolves had to go for it 2nd half and we got a little luck at times. But our overall performance was very encouraging.

Also good to meet up with '64 and revie era again and meeting barry anorak for the first time. Maybe we could change the away kit to stripey pink - what do you think '64? ;)

I think most of us saw a similar game, one where we struggled to get out of our own half for long spells in the 2nd half and hoofed the ball. One or two saw a different game. They are just pushing their pro warnock agenda imo. Workmanlike but a long way from the finished article.

I thought we looked promising, there was a lot of pretty good stuff which didn't quite come off, mostly from what I could tell because the players just don't know each other yet. I understand now why they call Rodolph 'The Beast'!

My view from the TV, and I know it's not the same as in the ground;

We are a work in progress, not the finished article by any means. That said, it's great to see a goalkeeper / back four combination that look like they can defend. (Question mark against White though, would maybe like to see Drury at LB). Very impressed with Byram.

Austin is immense, we won't be overrun in midfield this season with the ease we were last year while he's in the team. Varney Green and Norris all show promise, they just need to work out their roles.

Ross and luci were well up for it.

Diouf showed his quality.

A good result, a solid performance and one that gives cause for optimism.

Pretty much my view of the game too, Martyn. We're no world-beaters, and Wolves don't look like 'straight back up' material, but we were pretty solid throughout and played some decent stuff, particularly in the first half. White remains a concern but I didn't get the jitters every time the opposition got into our final third. Wee bit more class/composure in front of goal, and I think we'll be a proper handful for any team in this league. Positive start in front of a positive/supportive ER, can't ask for much more than that

Of course I am, the Corinthian spirit, fair play and above all strategy over short termism. Old blokes hoofing the ball around in their own half is an approach but not the 7\8 star job some have scored it.

I am chuffed with the performance. Neil Warnock Managerial at his best (knows how to balance a side) has bought players who are workers and not big stars with big egos.
Our defence is awesome with plenty of scrambling (just need to be careful with the yellow cards) to many to soon will hurt us later on . How did Grayson ever see that our defence was the problem  . Great start . M.O.T.

Just watching the recording of the game, and I actually thought we looked pretty good considering we had 7 new players in. Wolves down from the Premiership and we beat them without conceding. Couldnt see us doing that last season.
well said Jo
If u don't concede u can't lose, nice to see a strong defence for LUFC
