In the summer Cardiff signed Bellamy, Maynard, Smith, Noone to go along with the fire-power of Whiitingham & Gunnarsson. Six months on sitting pretty at the top of the championship 10 points clear of their nearest rivals they splash out £650,000 on Frazer Campbell.......Now that's what i call AMBITION

Are you taking notice Warnock/Harvey/Ken/GFH or whoever is in charge of our tinpot club

That's what is called gambling with money you don't have.....if they don't get promoted, they will go into bankruptcy I believe?

I don't think Leon is suggesting that we should have gone/should go crazy spending daft money, but rather pointing out that there are some good quality signings to be had for reasonable sums i.e. Wood and Campbell - on the basis that we only need some additions to what we got rather than wholesale changes

Unfortunately rather than spending £900k on a 'game changer' type player our beloved manager spent it on a right back to play in the left back position.

Totally agree with this sentiment, however I think wages, rather than transfer fee would have priced us out of this move. As others have touched on, Cardiff are in the box seat to go up automatically so have probably taken a punt by offering him similar wages to what he was on at Sunderland.

Thing is, I'm sure Peltier would have been good at right back given a decent run of games, but unfortunately Byram emerged from nowhere (no one was touting him as a first teamer in pre-season) and made right-back his own...

But I understand the sentiment, none of Warnock's signings have been exciting really, just players to do a job. He keeps talking about icing the cake, but you need the other ingredients before you can do that!

Cardiff have gambled to the brink of extinction, defrauded their fans to an even greater extent than Bates defrauded us, and have had to be rescued by a consortium who swept their tradition before them.

I'm not sure how many times the line "I don't want to see Ridsdale type spending but..." on here but that is exactly what Cardiff have done for many years and failed on so many occasions before.

So now, playing in red, they are finally in a position where their half decade assault on promotion may bear fruit. Having risked their very future to achieve it.

Not the sort of "ambition" I want for Leeds United thank you very much. For every Cardiff there is a Portsmouth, a Nottingham Forest, a Birmingham City and a Glasgow Rangers.

This and it's that simple.

We don't need to spend all the money in the world for the best players. We just need to get a decent scouting network out into the lower leagues. It's where we picked up the likes of Beckford and Snoddy.

At the risk of repeating mself - but I will - Leon wasn't arguing for promotion or bust - just a sensible investment or two to strengthen areas of weakness in the team and illustrating that there are good players available at good prices (and I accept that the full picture with signing-on fees, wages etc may make this not the case with some individuals).

Anyone advocating promotion or bust needs - as the Norn Ireland lads would have it - their head read.

Over the last 8 years we've wasted money on 70+ loan signings & the likes of Paynter/Rogers/Nunez/etc

How much did Billy Paynter cost our club in salaries whilst he was here ? for what....2 goals

Down the years we have chucked money down the drain due our tight-fisted lack of ambition mentality.

Meanwhile we'll probably continue to look at freebies/has beens/loan signings relying on a kid coming through the academy once in a blue moon only to be flogged to the first bidder in time

If fans are happy with this lack of ambition so be it !

As much as i am to see the back of Bates i think we have to face a reality check our chances of promotion are slim for this season i think it would be unwise for the new owners to splash all sorts of money around in the Jan window.It must be better to wait untill the close season and hopefully have a clear out and then try to bring some quality players in and have a right go for it this season.GFH have to takes stock and make some really hard decisions some of which might not be popular.I hoped we would have made a better show of it this season but the take-over went on to long.So lets try to forget what all other clubs are doing and concetrate on our own club no matter what we say or think we have no input into what goes on we have to trust the new owners to their bit it maybe with a new manager i dont know.Lets try and make the best of a wasted season and hope next season is better for us.

I agree with the more cautionary epithets here. If Cardiff hadn't been fortunate they'd have gone up in flames - we've been there and still have the ratty T-shirts to show for it.
I understand your feelings 64 - you're hardly alone in your wish for better things - but I'm not sure I would trust NW any more with his recommendations.
