Re: Byram
Why on earth are we offering one of our academy talents a ONE YEAR contract extension??
We should be tying down these youngsters to 4-5 year deals (like Derby have done with Hughes) so that we don't get into this position every time. Adds value, too, so if we do need to sell then we'd get more money.
I despair at how 'the club' have handled this...

Goodbye young Sam, enjoy your time permanently on the bench of one of the premiership clubs

12 grand until 2017 seems about right to me..that's about £625,000 a year

Re: Byram
No arguments about the wage, but if you were offered a one year extension knowing full well you could probably get a 3 year deal on the same or improved terms elsewhere, there's not much of a decision to make...faaip wrote:12 grand until 2017 seems about right to me..that's about £625,000 a year
Be surprised if he plays again now. Such a shame.

Re: Byram
We are of course assuming that Byram wants a long contract, my guess would be a years extension taking him to 2017 would be beneficial to Sam Byram than us, in which case it seems a reasonable offer.

Re: Byram
looking at the bigger picture £12k a week is peanuts in footballing terms he could probably demand double that at any bottom half premiership club and treble it at any of the bigger ones , add in an agent who`s filling his head full of s**t as well and the lads head must be mashed . :mad:faaip wrote:12 grand until 2017 seems about right to me..that's about £625,000 a year

It's about right for an out of form championship footballer...over paying players who don't deliver is how we got in this mess. He starts looking his old self and winning games for us, we'll up the offer

Re: Byram
If you ask me the offer of a one year extension is there to block clubs coming in with a silly offer of £1 mill it will mean we can ask for more money for him if he has a year left on his contract. At the moment as it stands we will probably get £1 to £1.5 mill in January and peanuts in the summer when he goes for an undisclosed fee agreed by a tribunal because he will be out of contract. With the one year extension on his contract we will probably be looking at £ 3-£4 mill

Re: Byram
I think, and I may be wrong, we would get a fee (set by tribunal if the clubs can't agree a fee) unless he moves to a different country (and I think Scotland would count as being a different country if for example he went to Celtic). If he moves abroad we would get nothing.
This for me is the big failing of the bosman system. If a player moves for free the club he leaves should be entitled to a percentage of any future transfer fees. I remember a playing moving abroad to a club for free, 6 months later they sold him for £1.5m back to a club in the country he originally was playing in.

Tweet from West Yorkshire Sport:
All parties ought to be able to remain professional and do their jobs (picking your strongest 11/push for a starting spot) throughout these negotiations.
Yet more terrible handling of the situation. He's not in form so there's no reason to start him. To come out and say this isn't going to suddenly make him sign... In fact, it's probably more likely to do the opposite (if the damage hasn't been done already).Leeds United head coach Steve Evans has indicated that Sam Byram needs to re-sign before he's restored to being a first team regular #lufc

Re: Byram
Tbf to Evans he did give Sam 20 minutes in the Hull game probably in an effort to boost his confidence, he didn't totally blank him. I do think Sam has seen we have a class RB in Berardi & then Wootton has done an adequate job when Gaetano has missed games, maybe he can't be bothered to fight for his place in the team, spat is dummy out to a certain extent.Genghers wrote:Tweet from West Yorkshire Sport:

12k is a decent salary for a player who hasn't shown alot in the last two years
Splinters in the bum time on the bench for Byram if he heads towards the prem !

Re: Byram
Aye, I know he came on, but this was said after the game. If Wooton is preferred to Sam as a sub RB when Berardi is back next weekend then I'll despair - Scott has done a job filling in at RB, but his game is limited. I think Sam has had it in his mind that he is going to leave all season, but none of the way it's been handled has been aimed at changing that. Cellino as much as Byram has spat out his dummy.1964white wrote:Tbf to Evans he did give Sam 20 minutes in the Hull game probably in an effort to boost his confidence, he didn't totally blank him. You can't be guaranteeing players games, especially out of form ones. He's not taking the RB position off Berardi, but I'd still prefer him playing on the wing than Mowatt!
Not arguing about his wage - another silly contract negotiation by GFH, and part of the reason we were such a mess when Cellino took over. I think £12k is fair given what we know he can do and in terms of his potential, and I suspect his agent/dad has been whispering in his ear that he deserves more.
To be honest, I can see him going to a Champs team pushing for promotion and getting games. He's unlikely to get into any Prem team who aren't in a relegation scrap...

Re: Byram
The whole Byram saga looks to have been handled badly. Too much of it in the public arena, either from player/agent or from Cellino/Evans. Surely this should all be kept in house? Had we adopted a similar line with Beckford re not playing if you don't sign, then we could still be languishing in league 1. Maybe Sam had his mind made up all along, but nothing that has reportedly come from inside the club wil have done much, if anything, to convince him to stay. that said, £12k a week is more than enough for a player who looks a shadow of his former self

the thing with the beckford saga is, he was bang inform and people were sniffing around. Sam is not inform and there doesnt seem to be any concrete interest as of yet and i cant imagine much will materialise unit his performances pick up alot.lufc1304 wrote:Had we adopted a similar line with Beckford re not playing if you don't sign, then we could still be languishing in league 1.

Re: Byram
I don't think it's about the money for Sam. I think he just wants to get out of the club. And I don't blame him to be honest.
I can see him going to another Championship club a playing week in week out. A Derby or Middlesbrough. Not necessarily a Prem club to sit on the bench.
