We'd be absolutely screwed if he left, he is pretty vital to the way we play. Still has his doubters though for some reason.1964white wrote:Chris Wood

Re: Leeds slap £15m fee on.....
The correct response would have been "He's not for sale".
I can't believe they've done that.
Would they seriously sell him if someone offered that much?
Do they honestly not realise what's at stake here?
How can they potentially harm our promotion bid by actually putting a price on our pivotal striker?
If they're not careful they'll undermine the whole campaign, in which case exit Monk to some other club's welcoming open arms.
Fecking stupidity of the highest order.

To be fair to the doubters in his first season Wood looked fairly average. This season though he is a transformed man and is playing with confidence - I have often said how vital confidence is with strikers and how even the best strikers in the world can look terrible when confidence is low. I am guessing that James Beattie has had a big influence with him as well as Monk and Clotet.

Re: Leeds slap £15m fee on.....
I doubt very much Leeds have actually come out and put a price on him. Simply lazy journalists having to fill column spaces so start tentative links and make up things that are then suggested as facts. Journalism has gone downhill so much since the start of the internet as now anybody can simply become a journalist without needing editors who check facts etc.Norm wrote:The correct response would have been "He's not for sale".

Even if someone offered £15m I couldn't see Leeds selling as we aren't under pressure due to contractual difficulty (i.e. last 6 month). The only possible first team sale I could foresee would be if we got a very good offer for Taylor and needed the money elsewhere (i.e.tying up Pontus, Bartley & Sacko and maybe making a signing or two).

Just when we think we've got stability and a future again some idiot goes and does this.
What message does it send to the football world about our ambitions.
I wouldn't have thought Cellino would go for this - is it Radrizzani's hand - joint ownership though??????
Be careful for what you wish indeed.

I'm not sure how much I trust the article, no mention of who actually said "£15m".
However, if it is true, then my take would be: Leeds would not expect anyone to value Wood at £15m, so no danger of an offer, but it's a further confidence booster for Wood to think that Leeds rate him that highly.

Absolutely no doubt about the influential part Monk, Clotet & Beattie have played with Chris Wood this season, they have worked hard on him. He has lost a stone in weight & he looks fitter & leaner, much more quality & confidence in his game these daysweasel wrote:To be fair to the doubters in his first season Wood looked fairly average. It's not so much whether they would or wouldn't listen to a bid weasel - this strikes at the very core of our ambitions and needs to be refuted quickly and in no uncertain terms. The official site says they are in negotiations with Monk, as we hoped they would be, but this is simultaneous farce of the highest order if anyone at the club has actually agreed the 15 million 'for sale' figure.
This fan needs proof that his club hasn't collectively gone off its rocker, and it's up to the club's PR to stop this quickly.

We might be able to sign a new goalkeeper, defender and winger for that money, however, we would have to sign a top class striker for that money as well and I can't think of anyone (within that price range) who could play the role Wood does in this team it's not just the goals we would miss it's everything Wood brings to the team. He drops into the midfield drags at least one centre back out of position to allow Roofe and Pablo to move ahead of him and go one on one with the other centre back his movement is incredible, Wood has great ability on the ball as well and creates plenty of chances for others. With Hogan going to West Ham for £15 million I would say Wood is worth much more than that. Ridiculous money I know, however, strikers are so valuable these days. Wood is our most important player and if we sold him I don't think we would even make the top 6, we could sign someone like Jordan Rhodes, however, Rhodes is only a goalscorer and contributes virtually nothing towards build up play meaning we would lose Pablo and Roofe's creativity from doing this as well.danhirons wrote:people really saying we wouldn't accept £15 million for chris wood?!

Re: Leeds slap £15m fee on.....
There has been no mention anywhere that any individual at the club has said £15m. A lot of these websites don't pay their journalists per articles written but by the amount of views the article gets - as such truth doesn't matter as they know that making up a story like this will get a lot of fans going on to that webpage.Norm wrote:It's not so much whether they would or wouldn't listen to a bid weasel - this strikes at the very core of our ambitions and needs to be refuted quickly and in no uncertain terms. Don't be concerned Norm I would be absolutely amazed if the club sold Wood even if a club offered well in excess of £15m as if we keep Wood and his goals lead us to promotion it will be worth a hell of a lot more than £15m - and if we don't get promoted Wood will still be worth big money in the summer and it would be a better time to sell as the money could be used to buy players rather than having to replace with the limited pool of players available in this window.
The situation reminds me a bit of how we kept hold of Beckford when in League 1 as although we could have accepted a £2m offer from Newcastle the promotion was worth more and in theory he would fire us to promotion. We didn't sell then (albeit different chairman but also a chairman who was happier usually to sell) and there is less reason to sell now as the promotion prize money is far bigger and we wouldn't lose Woods for nowt in the summer either.

Re: Leeds slap £15m fee on.....
I know what you mean...but I still think £15 million up front would be a great deal for the club if we could get a replacement - btw the Hogan fee is apparently 9 million up front - with 3 to 6 in add ons - but as you say still absolutely ridiculous!!!Gary Shaw wrote:We might be able to sign a new goalkeeper, defender and winger for that money, however, we would have to sign a top class striker for that money as well and I can't think of anyone (within that price range) who could play the role Wood does in this team it's not just the goals we would miss it's everything Wood brings to the team. I do hope we keep a hold of him though...and can't think of a decent cheap-ish replacement as you say strikers are in such demand

I had already decided to give myself most of the day away from MOT and do some physical exercise - done right it's a lot healthier than ranting. I hope the contract negotiations with Monk proceed apace - that would be the best news.

Re: Leeds slap £15m fee on.....
I have a slightly different opinion on the matter - If the club have done this which is a big if with the sources we have;
Leeds know that it will certainly make wood feel valued at this price tag and if an offer was received, doing the deal would only be bad if there was not an adequate replacement but with £15m, the odds are highly likely we could sign a striker quite significantly better than wood and/or have a decent striker as backup as well and that's without the potential of strengthening another area of the squad.
I don't see wood as absolutely essential, look at the defence changes v Derby and how that worked out.
These set of players are not the only players that could bring us success under monk.
The reason we are playing well is Monk and if Monk brought in an expensive replacement and got them playing the way he has each and every one of the others then I would have no fear.
All that being said, unless the offer was that high and it did leave time to bring in the right replacement before the window shuts then my opinion would then be panic mode and wondering what the hell they were playing at..

This lot have more money than sense and this could be a severe test of intentions if this turns into a bid.
