He put out a decent enough team for the first half, which was making a fist of putting Crawley out of the cup. Then at the stroke of halftime, he made three substitutions that defy logic. If you're going to leave your main striker at home, why would you take off his first deputy when the job is still to be completed? Why take Cooper off, who looked comfortable in the first half, and replace him with Casey, an under 23, who is largely untested in the first team....when the job is still to be completed? The second half team looked like a trawler crew had been winched down to replace the crew on the Titanic. Headless chickens. It has to be a Bielsa mistake. What annoys me is that he made exactly the same error with Hull in the other cup competition. Gods don't make the same mistake twice.
because plan A was to be 2 or 3 goals up at HT, which would have made those substitutions acceptable....as it was we needed to revert to Plan B....but we all know that MB does not do Plan B's

Mourinho wants to win trophies, but I suspect Bielsa doesn't care at all about winning trophies.

Camera's just shown a shot of Son laughing on the bench as Spurs are cruising going into the closing stages. Son was Spurs insurance if required.

Where was our insurance?

Cjay wrote: Sun Jan 10, 2021 5:48 pm True but can never have a squad to cover every scenario.

But we seem to try to get by on the absolute bare minimum.

We lack quality even in the 1st 11 so its no wonder our 2nd string struggles.

MB has to take a lot of the blame, Struijk a cb was playing in dm while KP a dm was at cb, wtf is that logic?
You're right mate, it's a reflection of where we currently = threadbare, which gives al the more kudos to what MB has achieved.
No excuses for today though.

I've experienced this so often, that's why I said to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
Still didn't expect it would be that bad though

BGwhite wrote: Sun Jan 10, 2021 5:53 pm So would I WR but we all know what's coming with this club. Maybe next year we'll be in a position to play better quality players in the cup but it still requires the know-how and skills to overcome any team and even if we'd played Marine today I doubt there'd be a different outcome.

Correct mate, add guts to that as well. There wouldn't have been a difference against Marine or Newport or any League 2 side.
I will always stick with foreign players don't fancy it in our Cup as well

Smudge3920 wrote: Sun Jan 10, 2021 6:06 pm I normally get where you are coming from mate in your posts, but this comment has me baffled?

We are basicly mid table in the prem in spite of the injuries we have carried all season... we get anymore we are in a world of hurt... And are you saying mid table first year back is somewhat a failure?
No it's great what we've achieved in PL.
But that "performance" today, and the one in the EFL Cup, is not good enough for this club end of.
To progress in the PL we need to improve the quality of the squad, which as I've said is dependent on time, money and no sentimentality.
I'm realistic enough to know that's not gonna happen immediately, but the sooner it happens the better.
What we have as cover ain't anywhere near good enough and that was amply shown today.
As we improve the first eleven the cover should by default get better as long as it's managed correctly.

Bamford wouldn't have scored with no service.

Why did Rodrigo not get 90 mins or even 70? Instead of sticking players in pointless u23 games, they need first team football.

Fair point. We did have Spain's number 9 on the park for the first half, but you should always have a striker there as cover for injury, etc.

Fans come on here raving about our U23's beating another set of inferior kids at a standard that can only can be considered as a non-league level then tout them up to play in the PL
