Re: Swansea City v Leeds Utd Match Thread
Piroe only went looking for the ball when realising he was about to be subbed, he won the ball, made a run & laid off a nice pass to start a move, apart from that moment, he made one defensive header.
I doubt I'll have much more to add after my re-watch tomorrow.

Was going to post something similar in that we'll still get very few goals or assists from our midfield and Kamara at least usually set up other players with an opportunity when he declined to shoot.Cjay wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2024 8:27 pm Tbf to Kamara he kept the ball better than Rothwell, his passing was more accurate and he was better at holding on to the ball and winning it back.
Was the absolute epitome of safety first though.
All things we know Farke loves hence why he liked the Gruev and Amps partnership and given what we know about him without those injuries we'd still probably be using Gruev and Amps now.
Will be interesting to see what we do if and when Amps or Gruev return.
But I don't think Rothwell or Tanaka are massively more creative in terms of final ball than Kamara was, bit braver when passing the ball but despite Rothwell taking all our set pieces we still only have 1 assist between Rothwell and Tanaka.
Kamara actually had 2 at this stage.
Farke's style doesn't encourage creativity and goals from midfield.
But Tanaka is better overall than Kamara imo.
Also after reading though all the posts today it seems many think Ampedu will solve our defensive issues which is perhaps forgetting the 3 goals conceded against Portsmouth etc. Of course it's vital we have him back fit and available but I'm not sure he would improve us that much to be honest.

Thought he was very much starved of service.
But when in and around the box he did ok, nice work to set up James 1st half.
Nice cross field pass 2nd half which James wasted.
And his positioning in the box was on point, things he won't get credit for but the own goal and the Solomon goal Piroe was exactly where he should be.
He'd have likely scored both times.
He did ok imo, ran around which is important apparently.

Yes that's the point that he's basically a goalhanger and I agree that might have led to him scoring one or two goals today. The debate will always be about whether that's enough and as we won the game today it probably was but only just.Cjay wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2024 8:45 pm Thought he was very much starved of service.

Most of our bench goals have come from starters this season.Cjay wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2024 7:52 pm He was useless last season at it, the 3 promoted teams had the most goals from subs incidentally (we were 14th I think it was).
It really matters.
Much better this season largely to one of the best finishers in the league and today an Italian International.
With the squad Farke has had here he should have been making the most of the bench far more often.
Hopefully it continues this season.

Also in this case starved of service probably means not being provided with tap ins from inside the six yard box. Yes you have to be there to put the ball in the net but most of us knew someone in the school playground who was equally as adept at doing so as Piroe.Cjay wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2024 8:45 pm Thought he was very much starved of service.

He's better at all the other stuff than he gets credit for but that argument has been done to death.
End of the day scoring goals Is what he does, it's as they say the hardest thing and most important thing in football.
And a point I've made before, he's been started vs the tougher teams.
Even Swansea today had only lost once at home and hardly conceded.
Sunderland, Sheffield United, WBA, Millwall 4 of the best defences in the league.
And the alternative is Mateo Joseph who again flattered to deceive from the bench, a talented but raw kid whose only really shone vs struggling teams

As I've said before Piroe is better as a second striker, however when played there he just doesn't seem to have the legs to get right up in the 6 yard box for those potential tap ins.
Honestly he's a proper conundrum hence the reason much of last season was spent on the bench.

Both the midfielders are still finding their feet. Folk were writing off Solomon not that long ago. It will click, particularly when Amps is back. We will improve offensively from the central positions.Jammy 07 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2024 8:45 pm Was going to post something similar in that we'll still get very few goals or assists from our midfield and Kamara at least usually set up other players with an opportunity when he declined to shoot.

Re: Swansea City v Leeds Utd Match Thread
I think the reasons you highlighted are the reasons we made the changes. We have two safety first midfielders in Ampadu and Gruev and didn't need a third. That said, Tanaka seems to be good on both sides. This season he set it up with 2 defensive mids (same now Gilly replaces Gruev) and 2 more forward mids. Of course the injuries messed up any permutations he was considering.Cjay wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2024 8:27 pm Tbf to Kamara he kept the ball better than Rothwell, his passing was more accurate and he was better at holding on to the ball and winning it back.

That was his best contribution of the game.1964white wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2024 8:42 pm Piroe only went looking for the ball when realising he was about to be subbed, he won the ball, made a run & laid off a nice pass to start a move, apart from that moment, he made one defensive header.

At the time I thought it was funny. We needed a goal. I think Farke planned to bring on Joseph and move Piroe to the 10. So it was funny that he seemed to have moved there ahead of the substitutions. Of course, we scored, and (I'm thinking Farke changed his mind) Piroe came off.
He had a few useful contributions later in the game. But I did think he was largely anonymous again. There was one incident I commented on earlier. He was in the box and the cross was played behind him. He seemed to give up in disappointment. Whereas it looked like he could have still turned around and laid the ball off to Solomon.
I definitely see a bit of laziness. He runs along the line as the 9 when we don't have the ball. But there doesn't seem to be much commitment or effort there. Bamford at his best was always putting the opposition defenders and goalie under pressure, forcing rushed passes and turnovers. I'd certainly rather have Piroe's finishing. But he continuously frustrates with the rest of his game.

He is the joint 3rd top scorer in the league, has the best minutes to goal ratio in the league, is one of a handful of strikers with 2 or more assists this season and has the best goal or assist contribution ration in the league.
Seems a bit unfair to keep criticising the bloke.

Same very talented subs
Same times he isn't using them any earlier.
But yes for whatever reason (largely down to Piroe) it has improved.

With Swansea's high defensive line do you honestly believe Piroe was the right choice at centre forward today ?Cjay wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2024 9:30 pm Pace isn't everything, Mr Hare will tell you that![]()

Not saying he shouldn't have played but he looks a far better player when in the hole rather than up top in my opinion.

Re: Swansea City v Leeds Utd Match Thread
I think starting Piroe was sensible given he scored both times vs swansea last season and he is our most in form striker.
I understand the point about high line and more pace in behind? But when we did get in behind JP was in the box wasn't he?
We don't play in behind much, we play the fewest long balls in the league, we don't generally play a style conducive with taking advantage of a high line, it's too slow and safe.
I think Piroe did the best he could today with limited service I really do.
On the rare occasions our wingers were able to get behind he wS where he needed to be.
It wasn't easy for him today, Swansea don't concede much until today and the 5 players behind him weren't exactly giving him tons of passes in the final 3rd.
The 2 Swansea cms between them played 13 passes into our final 3rd today, Solomon, Tanaka, Aaronson and Rothwell played 9 between them.
Only James really stood out.
Was thinking today when watching Ipswich though that I'd love Conor Chaplin to play with Piroe

I think it worked fine. Piroe occupied their centrebacks and it created space for our wingers to get in behind their high line.
