News Article The Breakdown: Leeds United's Desperate Bid for Survival

Post by YorkshireSquare »

As the Premier League season reaches its climactic finale, the battle for survival takes center stage, with Leeds United, Leicester City and Everton gearing up for nerve-wracking encounters that will determine their top-flight destiny. These pivotal matches hold immense significance, with Leeds desperately requiring a victory against an inconsistent Tottenham Hotspur side. The intricate calculations and possibilities have left fans and analysts on the edge of their seats.

Leeds obviously need to win their game against Spurs to have any chance of survival, with an Everton loss realistically being required. Leeds would also finish above Everton if the Toffees draw with Bournemouth and Leeds beat Spurs by three or more goals. If both Leeds and Leicester were to win with Everton losing, Leeds would need to win by 9 goals more than Leicester. Got that? No, me neither. With that in mind lets break down this weekends crucial fixtures.

Leicester City vs West Ham United

Leicester's survival are contingent on securing a victory while Everton fail to conquer Bournemouth. The Foxes received a boost as their captain, Jonny Evans, who was forced off with cramp during the draw against Newcastle, is deemed available for this all-important clash. The returns of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Ricardo Pereira, who have recovered from respective ankle and thigh issues, bolster the Foxes' squad. However, concerns arise as Wilfred Ndidi misses training due to a hamstring injury.

Meanwhile, West Ham's Nayef Aguerd has overcome a dead leg and is set to feature, but full-back Emerson struggles with a knee problem, and Gianluca Scamacca is still recuperating from knee surgery.

Having taken a calculated gamble in their previous match, aiming for a draw against Newcastle, Leicester now rely on a subsequent triumph against West Ham to preserve their Premier League status. The final piece remains out of their hands, casting doubt on whether victory alone will be sufficient to secure survival. In contrast, West Ham, with an eye on the forthcoming Europa Conference League final, may consider squad rotation. Furthermore, their lackluster away form, failing to secure a single league victory on the road between August and April, adds another layer of uncertainty to the equation.

Everton vs Bournemouth

Injury setbacks plague Everton as they enter a crucial clash against Bournemouth. The absence of key players Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Nathan Patterson, both side-lined due to hamstring injuries sustained in the previous weekend's draw against Wolves, poses a significant challenge. However, the return of Amadou Onana provides a glimmer of hope, while Vitalii Mykolenko's availability hinges on a late fitness test for his thigh problem. Everton's survival hopes hinge on securing victory or hoping that both Leeds and Leicester stumble in their respective matches.

Bournemouth, buoyed by the recovery of midfielder Philip Billing from a back problem, aims to make Everton's task arduous. Everton's destiny lies within their own hands, but Bournemouth's freedom to play without pressure could prove dangerous. The tension at Goodison Park is expected to escalate in the final moments if the match unfolds as closely contested as anticipated, with Everton likely requiring a victory to secure survival due to results elsewhere.

Leeds United vs Spurs

Leeds United face a critical encounter against Spurs with top scorer, Rodrigo, managing to train despite sustaining a foot injury in their disappointing defeat to West Ham last weekend. The return of Junior Firpo from a one-match ban provides Sam Allardyce with options at the back. Patrick Bamford is likely to miss out due to a hamstring issue.

On the Tottenham side, the absence of defender Cristian Romero looms large after his injury during the loss to Aston Villa. However, midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who also suffered an injury at Villa Park, has since resumed training and should be ready for the match. Furthermore, defender Eric Dier, who recently underwent groin surgery, will miss out.

The frustration of Leeds boss Sam Allardyce is palpable, as he has witnessed his side's defensive struggles since taking charge, albeit only for three games. Meanwhile, Tottenham's performances throughout the season have left much to be desired, with few occasions where they have truly excelled. In this high-stakes showdown, Leeds and Tottenham find themselves in a battle where every point matters. Both teams will be eager to conclude their campaigns on a positive note, but the outcome of this clash will significant ramifications for their final standings in the league table and Leeds United future.

We can beat Spurs 4-0 but it won't matter: Everton will beat Bournemouth. We were relegated before we sacked Marsch: kept him here too long...

everton will beat bournemouth , leicester will beat west ham as they will have their eyes on a european final , the game is of no importance to them . leeds simply cannot defend its been the problem all season , even when they have taken the lead in many games . that is why we have conceded the most goals in the premier league .

leeds could win , lose or draw tomorrow it simply wont matter , the 5-1 loss at home against palace confirmed relegation for me .

we have no recognised striker who has been consistent , bamford is far too injury prone and has not been good enough for two seasons now . rodrigo has never been prolific enough for the money paid out for him . and we have rutter a 35 million signing sat on the bench every week .

the midfield is none existent , roca , aaronson have not worked out , mackennie as been a dead loss , and adams is never fit . if forshaw is still in the squad it shows how bad the state of affairs are at this club , and that a massive squad overhaul is needed in the summer .

we cannot score with the starting 11 today
Leeds need to bring in a midfielder who can score goals and a decent number 9 in Jan 2027.

Shouldn't have appointed him in the first place. Never was the so called ideal replacement for Bielsa , someone didn't do their homework if they thought he was continuation of that style, though given who decided that then it's hardly surprising .As others have stated , Bielsa papered over a lot of cracks and huge deficiencies in the management as he made average to poor players good, but did break some of them. Since he went and even during the club have paid over the top for more average to dross players , with the odd success but haven't had the coach to bring anything out in them , nothing at all in some cases, you have just replaced dross with more expensive dross ( Christensen , Firpo, McKennie , Roca ) . Orta stole a living for 5 years from Leeds United , Radz was to stupid or blind to see it .
