News Article Leeds United Hierarchy Under Fire as Chairman Breaks Silence

Post by YorkshireSquare »

The Leeds United hierarchy has been unusually quiet over the last week or so, even the usually outspoken Angus Kinnear couldn’t even be bothered to publish his usual waffle in the matchday programme ahead of the crucial final day game against Spurs. To add insult to injury, the unsigned statement published on Sunday afternoon following defeat and our relegation to the Championship looked like it had probably been written by ChatGPT rather than someone with any emotional investment in Leeds United Football Club. But then perhaps ChatGPT does care more about our football club, at least it hasn’t been in Italy all week trying to but a Serie B club!

But finally, a mere 72 hours after relegation was confirmed our Chairman, Andrea Radrizzani, has spoken via a statement released on Twitter, not on the club site as yet I might add, which is odd in itself. It is fair to say though, that the statement has not gone down well with Leeds fans. The statement reads…

PERSONAL STATEMENT FROM ANDREA RADRIZZANI,
CHAIRMAN, LEEDS UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB AND ASER VENTURES

31 May 2023. "The last few days have been very difficult for everyone associated with Leeds United. I find it very hard to find the right words to say, other than to apologise to all of our fans for the Club's relegation. I am sincerely sorry for how this season has unfolded.

We have made significant investments to try to keep Leeds United in the Premier League, but in working hard to improve the club, we have also obviously made some mistakes. We are reflecting on the decisions that we have taken to ensure we learn the lessons to improve our club and make progress in the future.

Leeds supporters deserve more than this. You understand the journey on which we have embarked, and I hope that once the anger and disappointment has subsided you will see that we can come back stronger. We have invested heavily in Leeds United since 2017 and worked hard to get back to where the club deserves to be. With the support of our partners, we can continue that journey to bounce back.

I am proud of the progress we have made in recent years. We have become a club that can attract exciting players, we are strong commercially, we have seen improvements to the academy, introduced a women's side and so much more. In many ways the club has been transformed and we are committed and determined to continue on this journey.

I do not like to make false promises, there is still a lot of work to do and change is needed. We need a clear strategy to continue our vision for the club and work is underway to produce this which we hope will be reflected in the some key appointments in different areas of the club. We will keep you all updated throughout the process.

Andrea Radrizzani
(Chairman Aser Ventures and Leeds United)

The statement has left fans dissatisfied, as it lacked substantive content and failed to provide updates on crucial matters such as the recruitment of a new manager or director of football, as well as clarity regarding ownership. Speculation had been rife that Radrizzani might leave Elland Road following his completion of the Sampdoria deal, but the frequent use of the word "we" in his statement has led fans to believe that he may still have a role to play at the club. However, this interpretation has not placated supporters, who are growing increasingly unhappy.

Leeds United's relegation to the Championship has resulted in a significant decline in the club's value, thereby reducing the potential amount of money Radrizzani could receive from 49ers Enterprises as part of their buyout. It is possible that Radrizzani wishes to remain at the club to pursue promotion next season and maximize his potential income. Alternatively, the 49ers may be hesitant to complete a full takeover of a non-Premier League team. Whatever the true circumstances may be, urgent action and clarity are necessary to address the mounting frustration within the restless fanbase.

Fans are calling for transparency and swift resolution regarding the club's future direction. They expect updates on key appointments and a clear plan moving forward. Without decisive steps, the Leeds United hierarchy risks further alienating the fans, intensifying their current state of discontent.
