Match Thread Manchester City v Leeds United Match Thread

Post by Ellandback1 »

Saturday 29th November 3:00pm | Etihad Stadium

Leeds face a daunting trip to the Etihad this weekend on a terrible run of defeats that has dragged them into the drop zone for the first time this season. Their opponents Manchester City are dealing with a wobble of their own, aiming to avoid a third successive defeat after losing at Newcastle and then falling to Bayer Leverkusen in midweek. City sit third in the table, already seven points behind Arsenal, and cannot afford more slip ups in the title race. Leeds cannot afford any either, which sets the stage for a meeting that carries pressure from every direction.

A hangover from City’s recent setbacks feels unlikely. They have not lost three games in a row since last November and Guardiola rotated heavily in the Champions League, making ten changes and keeping Erling Haaland on the bench. The striker is fresh for the weekend and already has 14 league goals, eight more than Leeds have managed as a team. Even with Rodri and Kovacic out, City remain one of the league’s most complete sides and will expect to dominate the ball, something Farke acknowledged when stressing the need for Leeds to keep possession rather than go long for the sake of it.

Leeds arrive with injuries of their own. Anton Stach is definitely out until next week and Sean Longstaff has been ruled out for between four and six weeks with a calf problem. Seb Bornauw is struggling with an MCL issue and will be a late decision. These absences hit the heart of the side and force yet more reshuffling, something Leeds have endured all season. Farke refused to hide behind the situation and made clear he would not use it as an excuse, but the reality is that the squad is stretched in important areas at the worst possible moment.

The pressure around the club has been loud, something Farke confronted repeatedly in his press conference. He spoke about focus, about the group staying tight, and about the need for clinical moments in both boxes, the part of Leeds’ game that has been missing. He also reminded everyone that last season was the best in the club’s history and that outside noise never goes away at a club like Leeds. The objective data still gives him belief that the team can achieve survival, although he admitted that efficiency needs to improve if they are to climb the table before any January additions arrive.

Selection will be watched closely. Brenden Aaronson remains a lightning rod for supporter frustration, yet Farke gave him strong backing and insisted he will not single out individuals, though he also hinted that three full matches in a week is unlikely. Nmecha should lead the line again after scoring against Villa and Leeds need his hold up play if they are to relieve pressure and bring others into the game. With Stach out and Ampadu one booking from suspension, midfield balance will be fragile. Farke spoke of work on the left side and the possibility of adjusting the system, but kept most of his plans private.

This may be one of the biggest tests Leeds face all season, yet Farke stressed they will not travel in fear. The team has trained well, the mood is calm, and there is a determination to respond after playing well without reward against Villa. Leeds have been hammered at the Etihad before, and City remain overwhelming favourites, but Farke has beaten Guardiola once and insists belief has not vanished inside the camp. Leeds will need intensity, discipline, and a level of effectiveness not yet seen this season. A result would be a shock, but a performance with fight and structure would at least signal that the team is ready for the long battle ahead.

Farke here on squad

Overall, many players are in training. Stach will definitely miss Manchester City to be allowed to team training on Sunday.

Longstaff will miss the game, suffered a calf injury from four to six weeks. Not ideal. Bornauw is a doubt with MCL problems. Late call.

Man City and tough opposition

One of the biggest challenges you can have. We won't travel in fear. We'll be the best swe can be.

Mood among players is focused and concentrated. We know we won't be the favourite. We need to work socks off for a tight game.

Belief

We are really concentrated and focused. Myself and the players are fully prepared for a situation. Outside noise - even after best season last year - we expected this would happen.

We wanted to finish 7th or above. To finish 17th would be a great success (given) last two years all promoted side have gone back down.

For me, was always clear that not all results will go in our favour. Ups and downs happen with every team. Normal that outside noise is there.

I see what the lads are doing and how they train, how tight they are together. When I judge the objective data I am confident we can succeed in the end. That means 17th or even higher.

Dealing with outside noise

I don;t need to hide. I was aware of this passionate club on the first day I walked in. We played best season in club history last season. Several times there were questions.

If you can't handle it, dont become manager or a player of Leeds United. I didn't expect this would be an easy ride.

We are top two with Man City with phsyical output and fitness levels. I see how United our players are. What has been missing is the clinical edge in both boxes.

If we showed more effectiveness we would be in way better position. We have to improve in these terms over the season.

To use January and to even add more. We have to improve the little details.

Will this week define my career?

Not at all. I quite like the outside noise is on the manager and not the players. I need to be a leader who stays calm and doesn;t think about his own career.

It's about how we can stay in this league long term.

Leave Aaronson out?

No, no. He deals with it in a professional way. We win and lose together, We never finger point on one player.

Doesn't mean he plays each and every minute. I doubt a player who [covers so much ground] will play 3x 90 minutes in a week. It;s never a guarantee he will start but he has out backing.

Left hand side

Can't say I've solved it bevcause we've not played again yet. But answer is hard work on training pitch and speak to individual players. Then to find a good solution about the next game.

Change way we play

It's always an option. Don't like to speak too much in public. If neccessary we have changed our base formation. Concentrated on what we have to do for the game.

The test vs Man City

I'll be honest it's not very enjoyable at the moment because we're getting a lot of stick. After a spell of poorer results we played well vs Villa.

But if you don't win it then need to respond. I've won once against Pep - the best manager in the world - and won games against Bayern. It's the players who win the game not the manager

Haaland

It's a good question. We spoke about how to stop it. It;s about how to stop the crosses and balls through. He's at the moment the best striker in the world. We have to try and handle this and not get many situations.

Losing Longstaff

Very costly. Stach is the same. But once a player is not available I don't like to complain too much and use it as an excuse.  :roflmao:

DF: "Leverkusen had more than 40% possession. If we go long, lose ball, waste time, 20 per cent possession, will crack under pressure. We need periods to keep ball. We will go long when it suits us. Need a striker to hold ball. If direct is only plan, we will not stay up."

On being honest vs not losing confidence of players

My players know they have my confidence. But if I say in public we have the individual quality, no one will be believe. We have to work our socks off.

Still feel on the same page as hierachy?

Yes

Have ownership given any indication of points total?

No.

Being better team and relating that to January aims

If you judge job objective data we just judge it. We should have had way more points. When we say more individual quality we can mean efficiency.

You won't hear one negative thing about being sorry we missed one player. I speak in January what we have to do there, but not at the moment.

This sort of nonsense needs calling out, makes stuff up as he goes along.

2 seasons before more resources than basically anyone else, not a peep, didn't I perform miracles.

This season constantly makes up nonsense about people thinking we'd be in Europe after a win or top 10 and how sad with my £100mil limited resources

Using the approach Leverkusen used to justify ploddyball vs Man City is just fooking mental. . . . .

Leverkusen are a good team with a good manager

Someone else needs to copy and paste this nonsense and I can ignore it, much better for my blood pressure

I genuinely think DF 's press conferences are worse than Marsch and Hecky.

It’s just a load of crap isn’t it - some stuff from today:

“People outside the club expected us to cruise to 9th or 10th” nobody thought that Daniel

“When I judge our games, we are in the top 2 with Man City for physical output, good fitness and mentality” Just not true the team look knackered at 70 mins and not making subs sooner isn’t helping.

Calls the fanbase passionate again as if that’s exclusive to Leeds and gives him a get out for our results.

It was basically a pitch for his next job

I don't like to highlight how I change tactics during the game because I don't want people to think I'm a genius (a dig at the infinitely more successful and respected Unai Emery) Nit sure those changes work well we've conceded 14 scored 1 in the second half.

I won against Pep and Bayern Munich and got a point at the Allianz.

Said he won't complain about the recruitment or make excuses then immediately complained and made excuses.

Deflects blame onto the players away from his tactics (we need players who stick to the structure)

It's a paint by numbers out of his depth manager press conference.

Even The Athletic have caught on to the fact he's using his tactics now not the ones the players were signed for.

He's done here, I think he knows it and he's basically gone into self preservation mode.

Funny he goes on about data, the data also shows Daniel you are one of the worst managers in Premier League history, I suppose that particular date is wrong.

So what worries me now with Longstaff and Stach out is who will be taking set pieces.

So there are three that have been used with some regularity over recent seasons:

Harrison - He will be in the squad, but Farke could play him on the right instead of the obvious candidates Gnonto and James, move Aaronson inside and offer, in his own mind defensive assurance down the right whilst also having a player used to taking set pieces. Albeit he has a successful delivery average similar to Farke’s EPL win percentage.

Aaronson is another option - based on his past set piece deliveries and his whispering act with Harrison could we se a return of the much maligned, pssst psst psst . Into the wall or over the bar stratagem.

The obvious last choice is Gruev …. Mr safety - to me to you - is a Farke go to and whilst for me the least inspiring choice from what are pretty dismal options, the most likely.

So I foresee a midfield of Amps Gruev and Tanaka and BA on the right again. If we concede less than 4 and have a shot on target it will have been a good day for DF.
