Re: Ipswich Town v Leeds United Match Thread
He just came back from injury. Had a few minutes off the bench last week. Was unused from bench this week. I think he's classed as a small step below starting XI
He should be used as that kind of player now. Started as a striker. Played striker then right wing for reserves. Then was converted into a box to box midfielder - where he's still a work in progress. He might be useful to us in midfield given our current lack of depth. But given positions he's played, I see no reason why he couldn't be shaped into a an AMC/10.
Will be interesting to see if/where he plays against Salford

Funny how things can change. He wouldn’t have said that a few weeks ago.

Good to read your post about the game, think you nailed it on the head. Ipswich played their part in a cracking game though it wasn’t great for the blood pressure. It’s never easy stepping up a division but if Ipswich can keep most of their players fit they could surprise a lot of people. Best wishes for the rest of the season but not at Elland Rd in Dec.EFL View wrote: ↑Sun Aug 27, 2023 5:02 pm Ipswich fan here. Very exciting game, although not an advert for defending! It was a good contest and a one goal Leeds victory was the correct outcome on balance.
I watched the Cardiff and West Brom games and thought Leeds looked very vulnerable to attacks in wide areas, which is probably why Wes Burns was our most advanced player and Kayden Jackson had some joy there too. The Leeds attack was something else though.
Do you think Gnonto and Sinisterra will both be at the club next week? Sinisterra seems tailor-made for that Emi Buendia role in a Farke system so to me he seems like the one to keep at all costs. If all four stay in place I can see the problems defending out wide continuing because the full backs will be even more exposed, but there's more than enough quality in attack to turn games into basketball matches and come out on the right side of most of them. Farke's first title winning team at Norwich was built in that mould.
As for the season as a whole, I predicted mid-table for us back in July and I haven't wavered from that. There will be a couple of unexpected teams in the top six and we could be one of them with a bit of luck but that's also true of about ten others. We've got continuity and a great young coach in our positives column but I worry a bit about our lack of depth in certain positions. Goalkeeper being one of those; Hladky has stepped up well since coming in but was responsible for two of the goals yesterday.
If Farke gets things gelled together quickly, Leeds will be a scary proposition. With a better squad, the transition period will be much shorter than it was with them lot up the road and it's a very open league this season so I reckon he'll make up the gap to the top six fairly quickly. Even if he doesn't, the games will be fun to watch.
See you in December.

I was quoted that by an Ipswich fan. However they had 9 off target and another 7 shots blocked so that's 23 attempts on our goal over 90 minutes. That's too many. The Subhuman wrote: ↑Sun Aug 27, 2023 5:35 pm They had 7 we had 9 according to the BBC

We had 14 in total including off target and blocked.

I was at the game and we looked dreadful at times in midfield, Farke has to address this imbalance, also the defending needs sorting, we'll win more than we lose but, it will be calamitous at times, we desperately need to keep sini, willy & jimmy.

Thought we were erratic in midfield MC.mentalcase wrote: ↑Sun Aug 27, 2023 7:20 pm I was at the game and we looked dreadful at times in midfield, Farke has to address this imbalance, also the defending needs sorting, we'll win more than we lose but, it will be calamitous at times, we desperately need to keep sini, willy & jimmy.
Played some nice one touch stuff and bossed it but then backed off and let them wander up to the 18 yard box unchallenged at times.

It's what I've been alluding to on here today MC. I'm sure DF will analyse it and think about what he can do to address it.mentalcase wrote: ↑Sun Aug 27, 2023 7:20 pm I was at the game and we looked dreadful at times in midfield, Farke has to address this imbalance, also the defending needs sorting, we'll win more than we lose but, it will be calamitous at times, we desperately need to keep sini, willy & jimmy.

Yea we need someone to be able to slow the game down to our pace when needed, last 5 minutes in either half is where it would have mattered most.

Agree on that Chilli, with a little more composure we could be frighteningly good, tighten up defence and midfield but it will need to drop a winger or two, or at least get them to do more defensive duties.
Was impressed by our attack and chuffed for Rutter.

I loved the game.
Too much analysis guys.
If we concede 6 but score 7 then I'm happy.
Plus 6-7 is a hell of a lot more exciting than 0-7.

Just watched on LUTV
Difficult game to watch at times.
In the first half, Ipswich were much the better team. Our front 4 weren't involved a great deal. Yet, when they got their chances, they looked lively and took them brilliantly.
The tactics were a bit strange. We let them create a great deal of pressure. And we tried many times to play the offside trap ineffectively. Heard some complaints about the linesman. But without VAR in this league, you have to be really careful playing offside.
Second half, we controlled the game a whole lot better. Our forwards were involved much more frequently.
We won the game. So very little to complain about. Our front 4 are a class above this division. One of my non-Leeds mates compared us to Keegan's Newcastle. Fair assessment yesterday.
It will be interesting to see how often Farke goes with that set up. Some will depend on the next week and how the shape of our squad changes. Will we add more solidity in midfield or a better full back? Will we lose one of our attackers? Still a few questions. So it's hard to forecast what our playing style will be.
Personally, I hope we add the extra midfielder. It will be nice to get some more balance in the middle. But it will also be nice to see us roll out that same line up and hit teams for six. Farke might have his own style. But, as with yesterday, sometimes you just have to play to your strengths.

That's exactly what we said at the game, also what Chilli D alludes to, relying on outscoring the opposition is dangerous.andrewjohnsmith wrote: ↑Sun Aug 27, 2023 8:33 pm Just watched on LUTV

Seems we're about to complete the Kamara signing. To accommodate him and achieve the balance you refer to we'll need to lose one of the four attackers who all scored yesterday, but Farke knows that he has the Light Brigade option to turn to if we're chasing a result.andrewjohnsmith wrote: ↑Sun Aug 27, 2023 8:33 pm Just watched on LUTV

Great watch yesterday, realistically it should have been a 4-1 win away to the form team and table-toppers, what's not to like?

Very early still for Farke and he has to work out the balance. We have such good attacking options but can he get the attacking players to work in a structured way defensviely without losing the attacking prowess?
Ipswich had been extremely solid defensively yet we ripped them apart. Maybe more questions should be asked by Ipswich fans as perhaps them trying to attack us left them exposed too much. Maybe if they had been a bit more cautious then it would have been a far different game where it ends with one team winning 1-0 or 2-1.

I knew we would be, as soon I saw how both teams lined-up prior to kick-off. I made the point that we were vulnerable with our two lads against their three in the middle of the park, with us playing four upfront.mentalcase wrote: ↑Sun Aug 27, 2023 7:20 pm I was at the game and we looked dreadful at times in midfield, Farke has to address this imbalance, also the defending needs sorting, we'll win more than we lose but, it will be calamitous at times, we desperately need to keep sini, willy & jimmy.

That was my point, Shacks playing alongside Ampadu & Gray would have given us more protection, going gung-ho paid off in the end, it won't work every time, we'll get picked-off.mentalcase wrote: ↑Sun Aug 27, 2023 8:08 pm Agree on that Chilli, with a little more composure we could be frighteningly good, tighten up defence and midfield but it will need to drop a winger or two, or at least get them to do more defensive duties.

Gnonto, Sinisterra & Rutter are not great defensively, but very strong offensively.
