Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Tuesday 7th November) Millwall could make approach for Cresswell

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Tuesday 7th November, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Millwall could make approach for Cresswell

New Millwall Manager Joe Edwards may make a rescue bid to bring Charlie Cresswell out of the cold, and back to the Lions Den, in January. Cresswell, 19 has been frozen out of Daniel Farke's plans, not even making the bench in Leeds last four outings. After starting at Birmingham (Leeds second game of the season), the England U21 Centre back has only amassed 31 minutes of game time, and is now their fourth choice, behind Rodon, Struijk and Cooper.

He was one of Bermondsey's finest last season, until a fractured eye socket back in April, cut his campaign short. This coincided with a drop in form for the South London outfit, and they just missed out on the play offs. This season, they have slipped to 18th, after a terrible run of form, and owner James Berylson is keen to inject new blood in to the side.

How is he supposed to progress if he's not playing games? This surely is the same problem Leeds had with Joe Gelhardt! Should Leeds cash in on Cresswell? Should he be fourth choice behind Cooper?

Could Rutter's lack of goals harm Leeds' chances of automatic promotion

Georginio Rutter's all round game play has been nothing short of sensational this season, but the 21 year old continues to struggle in one department. His work rate, and creativity may be top notch, but in front of goal, he is well below par. With almost 1300 minutes of game time under his belt, the Frenchman has accrued just three goals so far this campaign, two less than strike partner Piroe, and three less than Summerville..

The problem is Rutter plays centre forward, a position that demands goals, with Piroe acting as a No 10, and Summerville as a third striker / inverted winger, similar to how Sinisterra lined up for the Whites last season. On average, Leeds have 16.2 shots at goal (per game) this season; only Ipswich have had more. Whilst the Whites have netted 25 times (5th), unless they improve their shot to goal ratio, they could face missing out on automatic promotion, and having to rely on the play-offs.

Leeds plotting capture of Tykes starlet

Leeds are plotting the capture of Barnsley's highly rated starlet Fabio Jalo come January. The 17 year old winger has impressed since joining the Tykes last Summer (2022) from Benfica, and has already become part of Neill Collins first team plans. Jalo has exceeded expectations, and Barnsley are keen to tie him down to a new long term contract. Currently, his present deal expires at the end of the season.

Jalo has shown little interest in renewing his contract, which may force Barnsley to sell him in January. Brighton, Everton and Fulham have also thrown their hats into the ring.

Cresswell - IMO he should be used ahead of Cooper. There's a really good player in there.

Rutter - score more goals? He's creating lots for everyone else, breaking out to advance play. Let's praise him for what he is doing really well. The instinct in front of goal will come as he gets more practice.

I’m bemused by Farke’s reluctance to give Cresswell a chance to prove himself, and to not even have him on the bench is, more or less, forcing him to push for a transfer. We have no option than to trust Farke’s judgement on this, but, in my opinion, it would be a shame to lose a young player, who’s come through the junior ranks and shown such potential without giving him a chance. The way things are at the moment, he won’t get into the team ahead of Struijk and Rodon, but a place on the bench and the odd half hour of game time would maintain his interest and loyalty for the time being, I’m sure.

Despite what Farke insists is the case, Rutter is the creator and Piroe the goal scorer. No matter what positions they are supposed to fulfill that is the case. So, as long as Rutter is play-making and creating brilliantly and Piroe is scoring regularly, then that is just fine.

Yeah Rutter is hopeless in front of goal.

Maybe they should get Beckford in to show him the way

It's looking like nobody will achieve 20 goals plus and so the load will need to be shared by a few players

We could do with finding a way to get Piroe into the scoring groove again

Would this involve swapping with Rutter as many suggest

Is it that DF feels he has nobody else to play 10 and so is trying to make do with what he's got? :duno:

Strange one with Cresswell. DF talks him up and yet seems reluctant to use him.

Rutter's strength is in with beautiful weighted pass, the precision ball that enables other people to shine.

Eric Cantona when asked what was the greatest moment for him, he said it was not any goal that he scored but a delicate chip that allowed Irwin to run on to it and score a wonder goal.

And that is what I like to see in football, players who elevate their team mates. There is too much talk about who is best or more suited to certain positions. Teams built around one star player be it Raphinha or Kane ultimately struggle if that player looses form or becomes injured.

Side before self has long been the mantra of Leeds united and perhaps Farke has embraced that philosophy, regardless of the fans who would want to see their favourites installed in the team.

I think players who score a lot of goals are natural instinctive strikers

You've either got it (Like me - LOL) or you haven't

You might be able to improve his striking a bit with coaching, but he will never be that instinctive striker

I'm v happy to let the manager decide on CC.

I won't lose any sleep over Rutter not scoring as long as he's playing well and others are, i'm quite content to let DF make the decisions on how many pitch minutes he gets.

Is this Barnsley kid owt to do with Orta ? If not let DF decide or whoever found Rodon, Ampadu, Kamara, eBygum, they seem to be doin alreet up to na.

I'm glad you've said that, Hasn't he played a good few of them recently, his close control is also quite a joy.

That silky sublime pass to Jimmy v Norwich from PB's headed clearance in our box didn't half make me sit up, well worth watching out for the next one

Loan put the ones who don't fit currently.
Cresswell will come back when Cooper and Roden are not available.

Rutter is on the up running the entire attack, if he keeps that up we will have 2 points a game.

Across the front 4 there is a fairly even spread of goals and that is surely what is desirable and will make it easier for the players who are experiencing a fallow period to work through a goal drought . With a consistent run in the side Rutter's finishing will improve and I thought his positioning for the goal on Friday night showed that some of the coaching is helping . He will never be the 20 goal striker but as part of a consistent front 4 he will contribute goals and assists and also play some sublime football . There are endless stories about how Leeds messed up on the likes of Greenwood and Davis and last year it was supposed to be Cresswell who was to be sold. Now it is being brought up again . Given the nature of the Championship season we would be very light at Centre Back if he went but you can't see him getting in ahead of the current 3 in the absence of injury .Personally I'm not convinced by the Cooper /Strujk combination when Rodon is unavailable but I understand Farke's thinking in terms of experience and leadersip qualities that Cooper brings and which may be vital over the length of the season.

We will be very light if injuries suspensions kick in, CC hasn't had the chance yet, I'd be saddened if we sold or even loaned him, but, as I said a while ago, I suspect we'll try bolster the CB position in January, also the lad from Barnsley will be cover for when Gnonto goes.
I'd like to see Rutter & Piroe switch positions as Piroe scores more from further up the field, also Rutter really needs to be scoring more at this level if he/we have any serious aspirations in the PL,.
We have options to bring both Joe Gelhardt and Charlie Cresswell into the fold, for some reason unknown to us, both are frozen out, I know Joe has a broken hand, but that has never stopped a player before, I fear the worst for both now.
If , and when Rodon, Struijk are out, imagine the flaming options !!
Surely the boss is thinking long term.

The trouble with Rutter and his shooting is that it has been powder puff, he has had great success with delicate weighed through ball that have been acurate and sublime, and he tends to emulate that style of play when trying to score goals... he tries to finesse the keeper like a snooker player pulling off a thin edge shot to slowly roll the ball into the pocket.

If he put more power and pace on the ball when shooting perhaps he would give the keeper less chance and he would have more success.

Perhaps the spectre of the penalty miss at Salford where he blasted the ball over the bar haunts him, so he rather sticks with what he knows best.. the accurate measured pass, an hopes that it will go in the net.

What nonsense saying that Rutter is poor in front of goal. What short memories people have. What about that screamer of a shot from 3 yards out against Leicester, a real game winner.

What was Cooper doing at 19. Did he get a chance?
After Coopers last outing I think I’d rather have Cresswell tbh or has everyone forgotten about that. I’m sure DF hasn’t.

Cresswell - I would not sell him. Not sure why DF isn't using him. For me he is the natural direct backup for Rodon. With good experience in the Championship. But I trust this Manager. At 19 years old there is still plenty of time for Charlie. Maybe a January loan if DF really doesn't plan to use him.

Georginio - Players like Georgi make the game worth watching. I've always been drawn to creative players. Great passers of the ball. In Basketball guys like Earvin "Magic" Johnson and Larry Bird could see things on the court that nobody else saw. And had the ability to put the ball right where it needed to be. Georginio is that type of player for Leeds. He sees things that nobody else does. And he can execute the pass. He is the special sauce that is making Leeds a joy to watch this season. He'll get enough goals.

We got cooper from chesterfield he as been here nigh on ten years more luck than management because the club were too skint to replace him he as never been a top defender and has earnt a fortune from the club at the same time
Cresswell is a far better player if they are in favour of loaning him out yet again instead of binning cooper then it speaks volumes about the ambition of this club

His weighted passes, which are too many to count, really are things of beauty. Also, Georgi's "chip shot" that landed directly at Jimmy's feet and led to his first goal vs. Huddersfield was something else as well. I could watch that clip over and over
