Match Thread Leeds United v Chelsea Match Thread

Post by Ellandback1 »

Wednesday 3rd December, 8:15pm | Elland Road

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke faces some crucial selection dilemmas ahead of Wednesday evening’s clash with Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea at Elland Road. The Whites’ four-game losing streak has dragged them into the bottom three, yet their spirited second-half fightback at the Etihad provided just enough encouragement to suggest this team hasn’t given up on its manager. The comeback may ultimately have been undone by Phil Foden’s stoppage-time winner, but the energy, aggression, and tactical adjustment that sparked it now frame a huge night under the lights. With pressure intensifying on Farke, and Chelsea arriving in relentless form, Elland Road is braced for a match that could define Leeds’ December.

Farke’s post-City analysis only underlined the stakes. While frustrated by the manner of the late defeat, he appeared buoyed by the impact of his switch to a 3-5-2 and the spark Dominic Calvert-Lewin brought. The striker’s introduction changed everything, dragging Leeds higher up the pitch, unsettling City’s centre-backs, and forming a promising short-notice partnership with Lukas Nmecha. Both players found the net, both impressed with their movement, and both now look almost certain to start. What had looked a toothless Leeds side suddenly found direction and bite, qualities they desperately need to carry into Wednesday.

There is at least one piece of welcome news: Anton Stach is fully back in training and available, offering Leeds the steel and structure they lost in midfield at the Etihad. Longstaff remains sidelined, but the bigger blow is Dan James, whose hamstring tendon injury will rule him out for up to eight weeks. Farke admitted he was “heartbroken” for the winger, praising his discipline and professionalism before making clear that this setback will influence Leeds’ January plans. James' injury means Farke must reshuffle wide options again, and the door swings back open for Brenden Aaronson or Wilfried Gnonto to start on the left if Farke were to revert to his usual formation.

Defensively, the variables continue. Karl Darlow’s absence from the bench at City was due only to a minor adductor issue, and he has since returned to training, though Lucas Perri’s performance, particularly in the second half, will likely seem him remain in goal. Sebastiaan Bornauw is also back on the grass after an MCL issue and could make the squad, with Farke hinting he was close to inclusion against City before injury struck. The manager was adamant that he won’t change shape simply to appear tactical, but his willingness to adapt, and his praise for Jayden Bogle’s versatility, suggests another formational shift is firmly in play.

Chelsea arrive as one of the division’s most in-form sides, unbeaten for a long stretch and showing steel even in adversity, as seen when they went toe-to-toe with Arsenal while down to 10 men. Maresca’s team will be without Moises Caicedo, suspended after his red card, but may welcome back Cole Palmer, whose return from a fractured toe is timely. There is also the looming threat of Estevão Willian, already with five goals and potentially set for his first Premier League start. Farke was effusive in his praise, describing Chelsea as “one of the best sides in the country, in Europe, and in the world.” For a Leeds side fighting to escape the relegation zone, this is as daunting as it gets.

I haven’t got a clue how to do this link, but look up YouTube, LUFC LEWIS. A half hour documentary - scrub that - a half hour history lesson on the rivalry between us and Chelsea. Professional quality unbiased (believe that if you will) film.

You young’uns will be watching this with your eyes covered thinking how the hell did this happen, but to us who were there, this is what made Leeds the club we are today.

Enjoy.

This tipster isn’t convinced Farke will go with what worked (to some extent) 2nd half v City.
I declare my love for Saint Daniel and I can shoehorn him in to any conversation.

Farke here

Good news with Anton, he's back in team training so available for this game.

Sadly for James, his hamstring tendon is injured and he will be out - depends if he needs surgery - conservative way but probably miss the next eight weeks.

Out for at least two months.

James

I've never seen him so disciplined. He was a bit heartbroken when he''s got this assessment. I'll allow him one or two days to be down and then it's back to recovery. Bad news.

January influence

Of course, if you have this injury it influences this plan for January. We are fully focused on next weeks and games

Reaction to Donnarumma incident

I just gave my honest opinion. Not about accusing anyone. It's just the rules what I don't like. I've done this in the past. You try everything to win the game - but then after the game it's like you don't like it.

We have this manager's meeting before the season and they (ref authorities) say their hands are tied.

Why Darlow was missing vs Man City

Missed team training with an adductor injury. That was all, was minor. Today was back in training.

On formation

I'm never married to base formation, not my whole life. I always stuck to principles. Against opponents you have to adapt and sometimes you have to change the base formation.

I've done this, sometimes it's been unnoticed during the game. I would also say don't change too much just to prove you are a tactical magician.

If you look at top teams - Bayern, Liverpool - always the same base formation. But if you have a side who doesnt have individual quality. It's not like the Paystation and you change and it works. It needs deep thinking.

On Bogle

I like that he's self critical and says there is more to come. He is a key player for us, he can play full back, wing back and even as a winger at times. Prove more and more why we wanted to sign him last year.

Chelsea

One of the best sides in the country and in Europe and the world. Won the Club World Cup in the summer. Unbeaten in a long while. Even in 10 men vs Arsenal, pretty impressive and wouldn't say they were the [weaker] side.

Bornauw

Very unlucky with injuries. if you lsoe a few weeks then it's really difficult. He was strong consideration for Man City and play a back three. He;s now back on the pitch and topic for the squad tomorrow.

Formation considerations

It's not often you have to sub a centre-back. Always beneficial to have a CB there - sometimes play a full-back there. Not ideal but other ways are possible.

Left hand side changes

It's not just the personnel, it's about what's neceassary. Sometimes you focus on one side more. Noah and Gabi have responded in professional way.

It was nothing against them. More about Justin and it was a feeling that it was right time play Willy. Both have chance to play tomorrow. We win together and lose together.

James rehab

Overall our record is excellent. Have to give many compliments to my medical dept - doing an excellent job. In this dept, we are already ready for the Champions League. I just have compliments for them.

James is one of fastest players in UK. So these players a bit more in danger of such injuries. It's the tendon, a bit of a physical weakness.

Was quite happy he started two games for Wales. Different load compared to Man City away.

Do wonder how the players feel when he keeps playing down their quality as individuals in public.

Not the first time he's done it

It’s just the truth, we don’t have the individual quality of other teams.

I know it is but can hardly do the confidence very good?

In the Championship he wasn't coming out every week saying "look at this squad it's a joke really, piece of piss".

I'm not a professional footballer, maybe they shrug and go "yes it's true".

Just don't see why you'd keep bringing it up? Surely you want to make the players feel they are better than they are not talk about how they aren't.

I’m long retired, even though I’m only 54 😁, but if my boss said something like that, I’d be rolling up my sleeves in a ‘I’ll show you manner’

He’s also maybe deflecting his own shortcomings, and sending messages to the board about future investment.

Either way, for me, it’s simply the truth.

Former amateur footballer turned 14% win percentage Premier League manager telling full internationals they aren't that good feels a bit odd :)

Like when Hecky was complaining about our squad with Pablo sat in the dressing room.

Reverse psychology maybe as you say.

Isn't wrong, just feel to say stuff like that you need to be talking from a position of strength (as a player or manager).

Did anyone see Chelsea batter Barcelona last week?

Best performance of any side all season imo.

We will be very fortunate to not get our pants down tomorrow night, they are one hell of a team, and to think how the Leicester fans gurned about the manager when he promoted them ahead of us.

Agree with you on this as all our players whether good enough or not probably have ambitions to play CL etc. Indeed some already have and probably think what's the gaffer on about as surely he can't mean me :)

Very interesting matchup between Farke and his unpolishable turds v Poundland Pep & his super clean nowhere near a turd billion pound squad.
A much derided manager by someone on here.
Now what if Farke had these players at his disposal & PP had ours. What then prey tell.
