Piroe could be key to marquee signing
A significant transfer narrative is beginning to take shape as Middlesbrough and Rangers prepare to vie for the signature of Leeds United striker Joel Piroe. Despite finishing last season as the Championship’s leading marksman, the Suriname international has found himself largely surplus to requirements this time around. Nevertheless, his pedigree as a clinical finisher ensures he remains a priority target for clubs seeking a high-calibre spearhead outside of the Premier League.
For Middlesbrough, interest in Piroe appears to be contingent upon their bid for promotion. Having recently slipped away from the automatic promotion places, the club faces the daunting prospect of the play-off "lottery" against Southampton, Millwall, and potentially either Wrexham, Hull City or Derby County. Should they fail to secure promotion, their focus will inevitably shift towards a top marksmen capable of firing them back to the Premier league.
Let's throw into the equation Boro’s star midfielder, Hayden Hackney. The Redcar-born talent is widely expected to leave the Riverside this summer, and he has long occupied a high position on Leeds United’s recruitment shortlist. Could Leeds utilise Piroe as a strategic lever to facilitate Hackney’s move to Elland Road. For Hackney, the move would surely make sense. He currently lives less than an hours drive to Leeds training ground Thorp Arch, and would also provide an opportunity for him to reunite with his former captain and mentor, Jonny Howson.
However, Rangers remain a significant hurdle in Middlesbrough's pursuit. Given that both Leeds United and the Glasgow giants operate under the ownership umbrella of 49ers Enterprises, it is anticipated that Rangers may be granted a first-option preference on the striker. Ultimately, the resolution of this pursuit may rest on Piroe’s own career aspirations and whether he views a move to the Scottish Premiership or a leading role in a Championship promotion charge as the most viable path to revitalising his career.
Gabby out for at-least two games
Daniel Farke has confirmed that defender Gabriel Gudmundsson will miss at least the next two matches after sustaining a hamstring injury. The Swedish international, who celebrated his 27th birthday earlier this week, appeared to struggle during the closing stages of Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea at Wembley. While he remained on the pitch until the final whistle, his limited mobility and inability to distribute the ball effectively were clear indicators of the setback.
Speaking ahead of Friday’s home fixture against Burnley, Farke described the injury as "serious," noting that the left-back will also likely unavailable for the trip to face Tottenham Hotspur on May 11. "We will try to bring him back as quickly as possible," Farke told reporters. "I hope he can feature in one of the last two games, but as it stands, for the next two games, we will have to play without him."
The loss of Gudmundsson is a significant blow to the Leeds backline. Since joining the club from Lille last summer, he has established himself as a remarkably dependable figure, starting 31 of his 32 Premier League appearances. His versatility at both left-back and left-wing back has been a cornerstone of Farke’s tactical setup this season.
Gudmundsson’s absence compounds a growing list of availability issues for Leeds as they navigate the final weeks of the campaign. Midfielder Ilia Gruev has already been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a meniscus injury, while questions remain over the fitness of Noah Okafor and Jaka Bijol, both of whom are considered doubts for the upcoming clash with Burnley.
