A furious battle for the breakaway populated the early miles, but an eight-man move finally solidified halfway through the day on the Suc au May climb. With 25 kilometers remaining, Mathieu van der Poel launched a stinging attack on the steep Mont Bessou climb, shattering the breakaway. Only three riders could follow his wheel: Tobias Haaland Johannessen, Tom Pidcock, and Alex Baudin. Despite heavy chasing from Lidl-Trek and Netcompany-Ineos in the closing kilometers, the quartet cooperated beautifully to preserve their advantage. Entering the final 1,000 meters, the attackers slowed down into a cagey, tactical game of cat-and-mouse. Van der Poel was forced to lead out from the front but unleashed an unstoppable 250-meter sprint that Johannessen could not overhaul.
For our purposes- Finnatic, Pullhard, and John R all correctly predicted Mathieu van der Poel to win the stage and were awarded 10 points. Clitheroe White also gets on the board with 3 points for Pidcock finishing 3rd. Which leaves just myself at the bottom of the standings on 0 points
Besides myself and Clitheroe, the standings are now very bunched together as we enter the first rest day. Plenty of stages left, however, as we are still less than halfway through the tour.Rest day today, and then we resume tomorrow with a Mountain stage in what should be another good one.
