In the West End of Derby lives a working man

Charlie Hudson's pigeon loft was down the yard
In a rented house in Brook Street where life was hard
But Charlie had a dream
And in 1913
Charlie bred a pigeon that made his dreams come true

There was gonna be a champions' race from Italy
We got out the maps, all that land and sea
"Charlie, you'll lose that bird"
But Charlie never heard
He put it in a basket and sent it off to Rome

Insurance companies sell you a policy to protect you against the unexpected. For this you pay them and usually they take the money and pay it to their shareholders. When something goes wrong and they have to pay you they honour the agreement but hike you premiums up the next time your policy comes up for renewal. Nothing is said about the countless years claim free. What is the point? What business sells you something that if you use if its more expensive next time...

I HATE insurance companies! They are nothing more than a legal mafia. Isn't running a business supposed to be about risks and rewards? They are guaranteed rewards with no risk. As you say, if they actually have to pay out they just increase rates for everyone and maintain their profit level.

We have two cats, one of them will only enter and leave the house via the front door. I have bi-folds across the back of my house which are pretty much fully open morning to evening. Completely ignores the cat flap.

He cries and scratches at the front door constantly. When I open it he pisses off more often than not. My front door looks like we are beset by a werewolf. I am not changing it until he croaks, 16 currently and no signs of his demise on the horizon.

The other cat is his brother who is going blind and deaf. He will only drink mineral water in the house out of a bowl. He refuses to drink tap water unless he licks the end of the tap - weird little fecker. To compound his idiosyncrasies he will drink rain water off the decking and I have caught him with his head in the downstairs toilet. I am tempted to build a well.

What will make me happy is building the well and taking front door billy for a walk in the New Forest. But I am a softy so I just grumble.

Just a small bone to pick - second verse second line - you sang ( I use the term loosely - not that I could remotely improve upon your vocal efforts ) times were hard instead of like was hard.

As Louis Walsh would say, he can sing…ish, he made the song his own, he can play and he can dance (need some evidence on that one mate)

Well one of my heroes is Tom Waits with that sandpaper raspyness and I aspire to have a broken and cracked voice like Bob Dylan.





Not for me the pure clean tones of an 4 octave opera singer, or the boy bands who have to wear tights trousers to hit the high notes. I prefer the subsonic rumble of Leonard Cohen.
