Hawk eye for prem

Post by mchldavies7 »

Wow what a genius idea! Would never have thought of that..putting a camera on the goal line...no seriously though, why its taken so long i just dont know, cant think of any other sport that has so much at stake financially that would have deliberated so long over a complete no brainer of piece of basic technology...christ!

Sorry to be pedantic (ok, I'm not sorry really) but this is not a camera on the goal line. The Hawkeye system relies on something in the region of 10 high speed (52 frames per second) camera around the ground. the flight of the ball is analysed by computer to produce an accurate position for the ball at any moment. The system has been tested over numerous games at high level, and has, so far, never produced a bad result. The tests were not used during the game of course, and were only trials. The result of the analysis takes 2 seconds, and a simple Goal/No Goal and time would be sent to the referee's unit strapped to his wrist.

Radebe this is not a video replay system as far as I know. Hawkeye is different. It is used in tennis (when serving) and in cricket to check ball flight for reviews of LBW decisions only. Unless I've got it wrong that is.

Also been used successfully in ice hockey, which is lightning fast. It works and it is efficient. Bring it on!

-They have said this technology will be used for goal line issues ONLY
This its self is the main problem for the following reason.
Say its last game of the season and its Scum vs a relegation threatened team. ... Rooney goes through on goal from an offside position and shoots. The ball hits the bar and goes over the line and the referee isn't sure if its a goal and he goes to the technology.....The goal will be given, even though Rooney was offside in the first place. Therefore sending the relegated team down a division due to technology that wasn't needed in the first place.

This system works in Cricket because when there is a wicket, they check for no balls, foot over the line etc etc.
It also works in rugby because they check the full move for offsides, forward passes and the grounding of the ball.

Premier league is doomed because of this

IF the refs assistant doesn't give that as an offside, then without Hawkeye it may or not be given as a goal, human error rules as it does now. With Hawkeye, ONLY the decision of whether the ball crossed the line or not is decided.... the offside part is still down to the judgement of the officials, just as the refereeing officials want it to remain.
Where's the problem, except for it being Rooney and Scum involved?

Alternatively say Rooney is onside but the ball bounces on the line. It's Old Trafford so the linesman is bound to give it, sending poor Wigan or whoever down. Of course the goal line technology would have shown it wasn't a goal thus saving Wigan from their spiral into administration and League One...

If the linesman does not have the responsibility of seeing whether the ball crosses the line or not he might be able to concentrate more on getting the bloody offsides right in the first place.

Another example would be from the euros with England vs Ukraine.
Ukraine had a player offside in the build up, they had a clear goal not awarded despite being well over the line. If hawk eye was in place then at that time the goal would have been awarded despite the offside. Thus awarding a team a goal even though it shouldn't have stood in the first place.
Therefore when this thing happens again in the future with hawkeye in place teams will complain that goals have been given when there was an offside in the build up and call for offside technology, or if there is a foul in the build up or throw in given the wrong way etc.
Football is far too circumstantial for just having ONE piece of technology in the game.

Radebe mate, I don't know why you keep saying that goal line technology will mean that offside will be ignored.

Offside will remain the province of the referee and linesman, and errors will be made just as they always have been. Hawkeye is of no relevance whatever to the offside rule.

I think what Radebe is saying is that is better if the goal isn't given because the ref has ruled that it didn't cross the line - even though it did - because the goal shouldn't have stood anyway. And if you are going to use technology for one aspect (goal line) then you should use it for other aspects (possible offsices, hand balls, fouls etc) and if you are not going to use it for those other aspects, you shouldn't use it at all.
