Match Thread Leeds Utd v Southampton Match Thread - Post Match Chat

Post by Ellandback1 »

Saturday 2nd April 15:00 | Elland Road

Southampton make the arduous journey up the country to Elland Road on Saturday afternoon as Ralph Hasenhüttl's team look to get back to winning ways against Jesse Marsch's Leeds Utd. Leeds did the double over the Saints last season but this seasons game at St Mary’s was arguably one of our worst performances.

The Saints started 2022 in fine form, recording 4 wins, 2 draws and one defeat. They also progressed to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, beating Swansea, Coventry and West Ham. Unfortunately, they have had a March to forget. Apart from getting knocked out of the Cup by Citeh, successive defeats against Villa, Newcastle and Watford have seen the South Coast outfit fall within six points of the Whites.

During Jesse Marsch's first month at Leeds, they have won twice, and lost twice. Importantly, they find themselves seven points clear of the drop zone, though all those below them have games in hand. Coming from two - nil down to beat Wolves will have given the Leeds players a boost that they will need, if they are going to record their third victory in a row for the first time this season.

Leeds will be without Patrick Bamford (foot), Junior Firpo (knee), Tyler Roberts (hamstring), Leo Hjelde (knee) and Shackleton (calf). Raphinha and Robin Koch have recovered from Covid and should be available to play. Raphinha missed the trip to Wolves, but was spotted midweek at Thorp Arch, whilst Koch was turned away from the German camp after contracting the virus.

There's better news for long term absentee's Liam Cooper and Kalvin Phillips. Both have been training hard during the International break, and are available for selection. Cooper will start alongside Diego Llorente whilst Phillips makes the bench. Illan Meslier has recovered from the bruising encounter with Raul Jiminez, and looks set to start between the sticks.

Brazilian centre back Lyanco (Hamstring) and former Leeds loanee goalkeeper Alex McCarthy will miss out for Southampton with their respective injuries.

Dallas injured now...unbelievable.
Not mentioned by EB but I understand Llorente has recovered from his back injury.

We absolutely must not give away free kicks around our box.
Ward-Prowse is probably the best dead ball specialist in the PL these days.
Big ask but if we can get a minimum of 4 points from our next two games we're probably home and hosed with six games to spare.

I'd love us to sign Ward Prowse.

We always give free-kicks around our box as our defenders/midfielders make rash challenges. Also Meslier lining up a wall is suspect.

4 points is doable as long as we are disciplined at the back & take our chances up top when they arise.

It depends whether we persist in using DJ as CF, if he's in that position at the start my heart and hopes will drop, this game is certainly winnable.

I think they will have our pants down, losing Bamford is a huge blow for us and we look absolutely awful with him out, we lose our shape so easily, cant hold the ball in final third and invite pressure. The only bright light is Rodrigo who has reinvented himself as Mr Nasty.

I hope I am wrong
Marsch OUT

Football has undergone a process of bielsification; pressing and possessing, passing rather than dribbling, intercepting high up the field rather than making last-ditch tackles, are in vogue.

A point would be great but I think avoiding defeat at Watford is vital. Overall this weekend could be a significant booster or another reality check. 10 points clear of Watford or at worst 4 but Liverpool shouldn't have too many problems against them. Huge opportunity here....we need to take it !!

Absolutely.
Not only that, but, the other results, even some of them will more than likely go our way this weekend, beating southampton would be massive in terms of pulling clear.
liverpool, man city, brighton, chelsea, west ham & spurs to win, wow, I'll take that, might even bet on those.
