I think you are labouring under a strong delusion... They still get over protected in my eyes, look at head injuries, they don't have to go off like outfield players do, Meslier is a flapper imho.

As good as the results was last night tbf j thought the team played well I think Bogel is getting there as is Pascal after a long time out still not sure of firpo I really have my doubts about meslier he is suspect at best some strange decisions last night .
I got to say Joseph is getting there no way would Bumble have seen that pass and before anyone says bumble would not have scored the one Joseph skied but lots of plusses some decent incoming and we will be ready to go .

Re: Sheffield Wednesday v Leeds Utd Match Thread
I had a rewatch also.
I'm going to praise Farke now (God forgive me).
Mentioned the Gruev thing on his thread but he definitely at times played a little bit further forward, it was an extra option, an extra pass on occasion which gave the Wendies team more to think about.
Ok he wasn't really a creative threat or a goal threat and its unlikely DF will have a midfielder in his midfield two who is, but on occasion he pushed on a bit.
Think that really helps offensively because it's an extra body for opposition to worry about, its also an extra link to the attacking players so you don't have to have Aaronson or Gnonto or even Joseph dropping really deep all the time.
Also on the attacking front Gnonto tucked in (he was playing left technically) but same as Summerville last season he came narrow which could be an issue against a low block we'd have to see. However what did please me is Dan James was encouraged to keep his width.
James played more like a winger which is what he is but too often last season DF had Gnonto coming in off the right like he used to get Buendia to and Summerville was coming in from the left and then you had 4 players basically within spitting distance of eachother, easy to defend against.
With James keeping the width it allowed the pitch to remain stretched and created gaps for Bogle to go into and caused issues for Wendies.
So quite pleased about that, last season at times it really was MarschEsque and it was really easy to defend against.
But vs Wendies we had one wide player staying wide to stretch the play and then the other one coming central to link with Aaronson and Joseph and then with Gruev coming forward a bit more it created an overload in our favour centrally.
I like that.
So I hope It continues.
Good stuff.

Re: Sheffield Wednesday v Leeds Utd Match Thread
I do think that (players coming in from the wings) was more down to how those players like to play rather than specific instructions. Like you say Summerville and Gnonto both like to do that which did make us easier to defend against. For me I'd have had James starting over Gnonto when both were fit last season. I do think James likes to come inside at times but that he is happy to go either way (cue a feeble Jaydog joke) whereas Summerville and Gnonto usually looked to cut inside meaning the full backs were the only ones to provide width.Cjay wrote: ↑Sat Aug 24, 2024 10:05 pm I had a rewatch also.

Gruev is probably giving us a bit more of what Farke would like from the 8. I do feel that if Kamara had have offered us a bit more than he did in that position we wouldn't have sold him. As it was I think Farke had probably grown frustrated but had no other legitimate options (barring Gray but due to Conor Roberts getting injured the option became unavailable). Last season Gruev's role was different and that is what people seemed to want to judge him on despite a change in role. Like you say he probably isn't the most creative but if he can get the ball in higher positions he is composed enough to pick a pass which may be the pass that leads to the assist or cross.

Hadn't realised how weak our bench was for this game.
Two keepers & three academy kids with no championship experience on the bench.

Weasel, this is far far from the final team DF wants to achieve (yes i know you know that).weasel wrote: ↑Sun Aug 25, 2024 8:32 am I do think that (players coming in from the wings) was more down to how those players like to play rather than specific instructions. For the moment he has to find the best way to get points with what he's got, and he expertly did that with what he inherited last season. You're bang on re Kamara.
Just imagine now the disruption to his plans with Rutter, Jimmy and Gray gone, yet the feckin Neanderthals in the South Stand just can't grasp it and DEMAND results. F.F.S.
Do you remember at school if your best players were missing from the team?

Summerville cutting inside is more natural I'm sure, same as Gnonto the other day, but if DF was unhappy with how much he could say start on the line come in from the line. Ours were starting in the half space and coming even narrower.weasel wrote: ↑Sun Aug 25, 2024 8:32 am I do think that (players coming in from the wings) was more down to how those players like to play rather than specific instructions. But a right footed right winger coming inside to the extent Gnonto did last summer has to be an instruction, Buendia did exactly the same thing for years at Norwich.
Hernandez did it for us as well.
No issue with it if you have the left maintaining the width but if both come inside it's too narrow.
Was a noticeable difference vs Wendies which was pleasing.
Reserve judgement on Gruev and his positioning but I did feel it was better vs Wendies, if it reverse to type I'd be disappointed.
Whatever we think of Kamara and this has been done to death but Mönchengladbach had the exact same issues in midfield as we had last season so I do think much of it is down to how Farke wants his midfield to play.
Maybe he has seen it needs to be a bit more adventurous, I hope so and if he has then good because all you can ask is for a manager to learn and adapt.
Same as vs Norwich in the playoffs though it changed then and quickly reverted to type, hopefully this is the start of a new system now a one off.

Barring injuries, the only ones with a chance of coming on were Piroe, Rothwell, Byram and Gelhardt

Just watched the Uncut video and number 44 was bombing forward with the ball.
I thought, funny, Gurev is not supposed to be doing that.
That's a change from last year, looks like he has taken over Kamara's job.
Looks like the defensive midfield work is now Ethans.

Farke only made a few late substitutions for squad harmony as none of them were actually necessary. Of course we still need to add a couple of players as injuries and suspensions are inevitable but it's also pretty vital we strike the right balance and not have too many new signings bench warming for most of the season.
