Farkes tactics work well when we have dominance I.e. when we have players like Dan James who are faster than anything in championship or Solomon who can consistently play quality balls in on the break........ They sacrifice some defensive solidity to engulf the opposition in transition and for a good side wanting promotion I honestly don't think there's a better manager out there.

My issue is that like with Farkes Norwich I don't think that Farkeball or his overriding ethos plays well whan A. A side is under the cosh and probably a little "deer in the headlights" confidence wise & B. Our strength in counter attacking breaks won't work against better sides when we are facing bigger, faster more skillful players in the prem.

Dan James is a good example.... So fast.... Without a doubt his strongest weapon. Unfortunately he's looked average since pre season. Defenders aren't left behind, there is good positioning..... This takes his confidence like it would anyone and his end product suffers.

When teams are set up we just don't look like we can break them down yet still sacrifice solidity at the back by overloading the transition.... Unsure of the answer but we've got to do something. We haven't got the level of player to make Farkes tactics effective. Not asking for hoofball but against the big sides 10 men behind the ball and the odd draw or win makes more sense than going head to head.....

My god the step up in quality has grown since 21.

Here is a question for you all who if anybody thinks Farke is doing a good job ?,cos I personally think a lot depends on what happens on Saturday you can see why some players don't want to come to us this is just my honest opinion.

We do not have that luxury. In fairness to the two kids you mention, they had fantastic pre seasons. Their level of quality is abundantly clear.

We have a lot of new players to try and get up to speed. They are the priority for this season. On that basis I can understand why he played them. It is annoying that we never seem to be able to break the cycle.

If the question is ‘ Am I confident in Farke at Prem level? ‘ - I haven’t changed my opinion, I remain on the fence.

The start to this season is playing out like the last two so far, we shall see if he can turn it around results wise, as he did previously.

And my idols tactics..

How did the work out in the Championship?
No use where they?

But we don't have much better players than the rest of the league, unlike the last two seasons.

Yeah because we changed it and started playing more attacking, which also seemed to coincide with Gruev's injury.

Haven't "wrote" anyone off.

Just expect even half motivated supposed Premier league players to run rings around some academy kids.

Was an opportunity to show what they could do in easy circumstances and nothing.

A whole host of them.

But most disappointed in our big buys, Okafor, Bijol, DCL and Longstaff

All 4 of them were hopeless

Least with BA we expect it.

Had hope for them.
Are you too young to remember Rio Ferdinand's debut shocker?

I blame the players!

Farke is not accountable for the missed one on one chances & those horrific penalties.

Also it isn't all about tactics

Players may not care much about Cup games but Farke is paid to motivate them, inspire them, get them up for it.

He didn't even manage that.

He didn't miss the pens, but a lack of ideas, movement, stuff like that is on him.

They should be desperate to impress and inspired, they werent

My gist is, players need time to integrate into their new team.

After Rio's woeful debut, he went on to become one of our finest centre-backs.

I understand that.

But they still shouldn't be making no impact vs children let's be fair.

It can only get better (hopefully)

I blame both. The players didn't look up for it, but the slow, dull tactics were a big issue too. Was like watching one of our hapless Championship defeats.

weasel wrote: Wed Aug 27, 2025 12:05 am It's also the nature of football. We score in the first half, go in front and we probably go on to win comfortably. We don't score, Sheff Wed stay in the match and nick a goal. Against Arsenal we could easily have nicked the goal through Struyjk, against the tun of play and the result changes on just one thing.
If you didn't watch the game last night let me give you a true account without just wanting to put the boot in on anybody, players or manager.

It was back to the Championship days of total domination, but lacking in creativity and finishing.
Man City are showing that the days of this pass, pass, backwards, sideways etc etc etc on the halfway line trying to drag opponents out of their defensive position so as to open them up are all but gone now.
Sheff W last night showed that with excellent organisation and good discipline all over the field even a good group of kids can do it.
You put 4 defenders equally spaced across the line of your own goal area line, then you put another defender either side of that 4 making 6, and then ask 2 holding midfielders to also drop into the original 4 making that basically 8 defenders blocking any entrance to goal.

You then ask your opponents to use a battering ram to try and break through. It now becomes an absolute trash game of chess until someone can get a goal, and if that happens to be the team already with 8 behind the ball, you can now expect 10 behind it.

I'm not looking for any excuses, we just didn't have the wherewithal to break down the door and credit goes to Sheff W, they can take a lot of heart from that, Okafor and the rest were pounced upon by at least 2 players the moment they received the ball.

I do think it was actually a good run out for our lot, but on that evidence it's way too early to be writing anyone off, in our players defence - I think virtually every single partnership all over the pitch was brand new : Harrison/Okafor...Bijol/Bornauw...etc etc virtually all. Longstaff just wasn't in the game at all and i couldn't suss his position in it really :duno:

I have no doubt had we got that first goal it would've been a drubbing for them, we didn't get it for a whole host of reasons and it doesn't reflect good on anyone, manager included. I will be worried though if anyone in the Premier let's us have the ball like that because we struggle to break down the door, but even City do now because the world has learned how to play against a far superior team - Just fully lock-up.

nb : The main thing about Okafor to me was that he looked a yard too slow and probably 2 for the Premiership, he won't get the luxury they do on the continent to dwell on the incoming pass, Prem defenders will be up his ass like Arsenal were against our defenders.
Hopefully last night told him ' Jesus if these are bottom of the Championship kids, what are the prem pro's like?!!"

Our line up and game plan v Newcastle is now interesting to say the least. I'm hoping for proper in your face stuff, but hoping they're not as good as Arsenal at it - he has to stick to our DNA for now, especially because we're at home and Newcastle won't be at full strength.

ps ; If you have any more questions about the game, i'll try and give you a honest answer, e.g : DCL - Very hard to comment on that outing alone, i think he looked quite lively myself and got in good positions, the ones that really want to knock him will say he missed a barndoor one.

DDB220 wrote: Wed Aug 27, 2025 7:34 am That is what he does. Although he will say being disappointed is not writing a player off.

The spinner of despair.

Here are the key points:

It was a league cup game - seen it all before. Be honest - very few really gives a sh1t about that cup.

We are seeking to finish 17th - staying up is the real test. We will lose a lot of games this season. No point despairing after every loss. It isn’t good for the head.
And that's why we never win anything. We aren't going to win the Premiership, so why not try and win the League Cup?
